The Drums of judgment

610 Words
Kondo raised his rifle with trembling hands. “I command armies.” Amahle stepped closer calmly. “And yet you fear what stands before you.” Kondo fired. The weapon exploded in his hands. He screamed as blood poured from his palms. The drums pulsed softly like beating hearts. Amahle’s voice echoed strangely through the forest. “These drums were created when the ancestors begged the spirits for protection against darkness. They are not weapons. They are balance.” Thunder shook the skies. “But greedy men always mistake power for ownership.” For the first time in many years, General Kondo felt true fear. Not fear of death. Fear of judgment. Amahle lifted one drumstick. “When evil enters the sacred,” she whispered, “the sacred devours evil.” She struck the drum once. BOOM. Every weapon carried by Kondo’s soldiers crumbled instantly into dust. She struck again. BOOM. The spirits surged forward like a living storm. Shadows swallowed screaming soldiers one by one until only silence remained. Kondo tried to crawl away. But the earth beneath him cracked open into darkness. Ghostly hands emerged from below, gripping him tightly. “No! Please!” Amahle watched silently. The shadows dragged Kondo underground forever. Then the forest became still again. Rain began falling softly from the heavens. And dawn slowly returned to Nzali. ⸻ Chapter Six — The Burial of Power The surviving villagers emerged cautiously from hiding places among the trees. The invading army was gone. No bodies remained. Only footprints in the wet earth. Mosi approached Amahle slowly. “You fulfilled the prophecy,” he said. Amahle looked sadly at the drums. “At what cost?” The old priest sighed. “Power always demands memory.” Weeks passed as Nzali rebuilt itself. Homes were repaired. Crops replanted. Songs slowly returned to village fires at night. But Amahle changed. She spent long hours alone beside the Great Baobab speaking softly to unseen spirits. Sometimes villagers heard drums echoing through distant forests during storms. One evening, Amahle gathered the elders beneath the sacred tree. “These drums cannot remain here,” she said quietly. The elders gasped. “They protect us,” one argued. “They also tempt men,” Amahle replied. “As long as they exist openly, darkness will continue searching for them.” Mosi nodded slowly. “She speaks truth.” That same night, Amahle carried the drums deep beneath the earth into forbidden caves older than memory itself. At the deepest chamber stood a black stone altar covered in glowing symbols. Amahle placed the drums carefully upon it. The air vibrated softly. Almost like breathing. “Will anyone ever find them again?” Mosi asked. Amahle touched the drums one final time. “Only when darkness returns.” The glowing symbols blazed brightly. Stone doors began sealing the chamber forever. As they walked away, one final drumbeat echoed through the underground darkness. BOOM. ⸻ Chapter Seven — The Legend Lives Centuries passed. Kingdoms rose and fell. Empires invaded Africa. Wars scarred the land. And the hidden kingdom of Nzali slowly disappeared from history. Some believed it never existed. Others claimed the forest swallowed it whole. Yet strange stories continued spreading through nearby villages. Hunters spoke of ghostly warriors appearing during thunderstorms. Travelers reported hearing distant drumbeats beneath the earth after midnight. And elders still warned children never to follow mysterious music into forbidden forests. Because somewhere beneath ancient roots and forgotten caves, the Drums of Shadows still wait. Listening. Dreaming. Waiting for the day humanity once again forgets the difference between power and wisdom. And when that day comes… The drums will awaken again.
