‘No! You can’t fall asleep,’ Emilia said helplessly, wishing someone spoke English. She tapped him lightly on the cheek, until he looked at her in bafflement. She mimed eating. ‘You need to eat more.’ Pressing a piece of bread to his lips, she watched like a hawk as he slowly ate, all the while analysing his general health as best she could. He was too weak. Even with today’s feeding, he wouldn’t survive the remainder of the journey to Virginia – not without some extra help.
