CHAPTER 10 It hadn’t been an easy start to the day for Emilia. Everywhere she turned in the house, she could see David – leaning back in his chair in the study, chatting with friends in the living room over Thanksgiving, pretending to be baffled by a simple box of macaroni cheese in the kitchen. Her bedroom was her only refuge and reacquainting herself with all her things had been the one bright spot of her day. She wandered around it slowly, fingering the scarves she had draped over the corner of the duchess’ mirror, pulling out her favourite book with the broken spine from so many readings, smiling at the plethora of framed photos spanning years of fun and laughter with her friends.
