IVY I sat still long after Miss Lisa dismissed us, though the word dismissed made it sound like she gently patted us on the head and wished us luck. What she really did was drop a grenade onto my already crumbling life and walk out with a grin. Everyone else moved on. I couldn’t. Not because of Sophia. I mean, yes, okay, Sophia was a walking guillotine with pretty hair and a mean streak, but she wasn’t what made my skin itch today. It was what I saw before I got to class. Chains. People in them. Being ushered—dragged, really—into that secluded concrete building behind the science wing. The one they said was off limits. I almost got closer. Almost.
