Natalie felt the cane being tapped lightly against her bottom. She wondered if Mrs Jackson was a skilled practitioner. Administering a paddling was not a difficult art; the implement was large enough to cover the whole of the buttocks. The cane, however, required more finesse. The secret, as Miss Hannah often explained to her girls, was to group the strokes into a narrow spectrum of the bottom, so that the maximum effect was obtained. “And never,” Miss Hannah would add, “strike either on the coccyx, the tailbone, because this could be dangerous, nor on the side, on the hips, since this is painful without necessarily being arousing. Unless, of course, you are administering a punishment, in which case a couple on the hips might help to ram home the lesson you are giving.”
