Hannah had assembled Penelope and Phoebe to observe her session with Frau Ledermann, the college’s German teacher, who had originally been turned then trained by Hannah’s mentor, Miss Judith. Having inherited her, so to speak, Hannah took over as her owner. Frau Ledermann was not whored out, as the other girls were, though once or twice Hannah had threatened her with this fate. Instead, she was allowed to continue with her job of teaching the girls German, but was subjected to an increasingly strict regime of obedience, submission and humiliation. Although she often appeared to resist, or at least hesitate, in her performance of commands, Hannah knew full well that the woman thrived on the most demanding treatment.
