CHAPTER 3 Brygida pulled up the sleeve of a too-large fancy dress as she stepped out from behind the screen. Pulling down the shoulders made the front dip dangerously low. The shoulder width alone must have been made for a woman twice as broad as Brygida. Dressed in a carmine velvet gown, Urszula leaned back in a chair, tossing a knife in the air and catching it idly. She looked about as comfortable in that gown as a żbik wildcat in the cold Skawa River. Across from her, Jadwiga watched, her mouth parted slightly and her eyes following the path of the knife up and down, one hand resting against the swell of her stomach. Brygida wrapped her arms around her torso, awkwardly trying to keep herself from exposing her body. “What do you think?” she asked uncertainly. “Oh.... it’s....” Jadwig
