CHAPTER EIGHT
"Dear Diary,"
"I used to think getting close to someone happened all at once.
One day you barely know them, and the next day they somehow become important.
But maybe that's not how it happens.
Maybe it happens quietly.
One conversation at a time.
One laugh.
One shared secret.
One ordinary afternoon that you don't realize you'll remember later.
And maybe that's the dangerous part.
You don't notice yourself getting attached until you're already there."
The campus was unusually busy that Friday.
A notice had been posted around the university earlier that week announcing the annual Founders' Week Fair, and almost every student seemed determined to participate.
The central courtyard had been decorated with banners, small stalls and strings of paper lanterns.
Different departments had set up tables displaying food, artwork, games and handmade items.
Music played from speakers near the student center.
Students moved from one stall to another, calling out to friends and bargaining over snacks.
Lena stood beside Maya and Chloe, staring at a table filled with handmade bracelets.
"This one is pretty," Chloe said.
Maya picked up another.
"No, this one is prettier."
"You said that about the last three."
"Because they're all pretty."
Lena laughed.
"You're impossible."
"I prefer enthusiastic."
Chloe smiled.
"That's one word for it."
Lena reached toward a bracelet made with small blue beads.
She turned it over in her fingers.
"I like this one."
Maya immediately grinned.
"Of course you do."
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
"You said it like it meant something."
"I simply noticed that you always choose blue."
Lena looked down at the bracelet.
"I guess I do."
Before Maya could tease her again, a familiar voice came from behind them.
"Hey."
Lena turned.
Ethan stood there with Noah and Jason.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi."
Maya looked between them.
"We're shopping."
Noah nodded seriously.
"I can see that."
Maya narrowed her eyes.
"Why did you say it like that?"
"Because I didn't know if you were planning a robbery."
Jason laughed.
Chloe shook her head.
"Ignore them."
Lena smiled.
"What are you guys doing?"
"Trying to find something to eat," Jason replied.
Noah pointed toward a nearby food stall.
"But Ethan has spent ten minutes deciding what he wants."
"I haven't."
"You have."
Ethan sighed.
"I was choosing."
"That's what indecisive people call it."
Everyone laughed.
For a moment, it felt completely normal.
No assignments.
No rumors.
No awkwardness.
Just friends spending time together.
Lena looked around.
It surprised her how easily their groups had started mixing.
Maya and Noah were already arguing about which food stall was best.
Chloe was discussing bracelets with Jason.
And Ethan was standing beside Lena.
Neither of them seemed to know exactly when that had become normal.
"You still haven't bought anything," Ethan said.
"Not yet."
He looked at the bracelet in her hand.
"That's nice."
"You think so?"
"Yeah."
She smiled.
"I'm thinking of getting it."
"Then get it."
"You're making it sound easy."
"It is."
She laughed.
"You say that because you're not paying."
"I can pay."
Lena looked at him.
"No."
"I was joking."
"Good."
He smiled.
"You're very serious about your money."
"I have to be."
"Fair enough."
They continued walking with the others.
Neither noticed the person watching them from across the courtyard.
Ava stood beside Sophie and Nicole.
Her eyes followed Ethan.
Then Lena.
Then Ethan again.
Sophie noticed.
"You've been looking at them for five minutes."
"I haven't."
"You have," Nicole said.
Ava folded her arms.
"They're always together."
"They're partners," Sophie reminded her.
"I know."
"Then what's bothering you?"
Ava didn't answer.
She watched as Lena laughed at something Ethan said.
Ethan smiled.
That smile bothered her more than it should have.
"He's different around her."
Nicole glanced at her.
"Maybe that's what you're worried about."
Ava frowned.
"I'm not worried."
Sophie smiled.
"Then stop staring."
Ava looked away.
"I don't like being ignored."
Nicole laughed.
"Now we're getting somewhere."
---
Later that afternoon, Lena found herself sitting on the steps outside the student center with Ethan.
The others had gone to get food.
For once, there was no one around to interrupt them.
Ethan looked at the bracelet on her wrist.
"You bought it."
Lena looked down.
"Yes."
"It looks good."
"Thank you."
She smiled.
There was a comfortable silence between them.
Then Ethan spoke.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Why do you write?"
Lena looked surprised.
"That's a strange question."
"Why?"
"Because I don't think I've ever really thought about it."
He waited.
She looked out across the courtyard.
"I think I write because there are things I don't know how to say."
Ethan nodded.
"I understand that."
"Do you write?"
"Sometimes."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"What do you write?"
He hesitated.
"Mostly thoughts."
"Like a diary?"
"Something like that."
Lena smiled.
"I didn't know you kept one."
"I don't tell people."
"Why?"
He looked at her.
"Because some things are easier to write than say."
Lena's expression softened.
"I understand."
For a moment, neither spoke.
There was something strange about realizing that they had something so similar.
Two people who wrote down the things they couldn't say.
Two people who kept thoughts hidden on paper.
But neither thought much of it.
Not yet.
A loud cheer suddenly came from the courtyard.
They both turned.
Maya was standing on a small platform holding a microphone.
Lena stared.
"What is she doing?"
Ethan laughed.
"I don't know."
Noah appeared beside the platform.
"Welcome to the most important competition of Founders' Week!"
Maya raised her hand dramatically.
"The mystery challenge!"
Lena covered her face.
"She's embarrassing."
Ethan laughed.
"I think she's having fun."
"She always is."
The competition involved several students answering random questions about the university.
Lena and Ethan ended up joining Maya, Noah, Chloe and Jason.
For the next hour, they laughed, competed and accused each other of cheating.
At one point, Ethan answered a question correctly.
Maya pointed at him.
"He's suspicious."
Noah nodded.
"Very."
Ethan laughed.
"You two are just jealous."
Lena smiled.
Watching him like this felt different.
He wasn't the distant, famous boy everyone talked about.
He was simply Ethan.
The boy who laughed too loudly when Noah made terrible jokes.
The boy who always listened when Chloe spoke.
The boy who had somehow become someone Lena looked forward to seeing.
And that realization frightened her slightly.
Because friendship was beginning to feel dangerously close to something else.
---
As the fair began winding down, the group slowly separated.
Chloe had to meet someone from her department.
Jason offered to walk her.
Maya and Noah went toward the food stalls.
Lena remained near the courtyard with Ethan.
"You enjoyed today?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Even though Maya embarrassed you?"
"Especially because of that."
He laughed.
"I'm glad."
Lena smiled.
"Me too."
Then her expression changed slightly.
"Ethan..."
"Yeah?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
She hesitated.
"About Ava."
His smile disappeared.
"Ava?"
"Yes."
Lena looked down.
"I heard the rumors."
Ethan was quiet.
"What did you hear?"
"That you two are together."
He stared at her for a moment.
Then he shook his head.
"We're not."
Lena looked up.
"You're not?"
"No."
"Oh."
She tried to hide her relief.
Ethan noticed.
But he didn't say anything.
"People see us together sometimes," he explained.
"Her family knows mine. We've known each other for a while."
Lena nodded.
"Okay."
"That's all it is."
She smiled.
"Thanks for telling me."
"You could have asked me earlier."
"I didn't want to seem nosy."
"You wouldn't have."
She smiled.
"Good to know."
They began walking toward the main entrance.
After a few steps, Ethan spoke again.
"And Lena?"
She turned.
"If you ever hear something about me..."
He paused.
"...ask me instead of believing everyone else."
She nodded.
"I will."
A small smile appeared between them.
Neither knew it, but something had changed.
Not dramatically.
Not enough for either of them to name it.
But enough.
---
That night, Lena sat at her desk.
She opened her diary.
Her pen hovered above the page.
Then she began.
"Dear Diary,
Today I learned that rumors are just stories people tell when they don't know the truth.
Ethan and Ava aren't together.
I don't know why hearing that made me feel relieved.
Maybe because I don't like the idea of him with someone else.
That sounds terrible when I write it down.
But at least here, I don't have to pretend.
I think I'm getting too comfortable around him.
And I'm starting to wonder if being comfortable around someone can become something more.
I don't know.
Maybe I'm thinking too much.
For now, I'll just enjoy being his friend."
She closed the diary.
Across campus, Ethan opened his own.
He wrote:
"Dear Diary,
Today Lena asked me about Ava.
For some reason, I wanted her to know the truth.
I wanted her to know there was nothing between us.
I don't know why that mattered so much.
Maybe because I care what she thinks of me.
More than I probably should.
She's becoming my favorite part of the day.
I don't think I'm ready to admit what that means."
He closed the diary.
Outside, the university lights slowly disappeared one by one.
The fair was over.
The laughter had faded.
The campus was quiet again.
But somewhere between two rooms...
Two people were thinking about each other.
Neither had said the words.
Neither was ready.
And for now...
That was enough.
