"Karma?" Lachlan laughed dismissively. "Once I walk out of here with ten million dollars, I'll be the winner. Why would I care what happens to you?"
He pulled Mara into his arms as if the prize money were already his.
The host glanced at the lie detector's steady readings and raised his voice. "The lie detector confirms that Mr. Frost's answer is completely truthful! His total winnings have now reached four million dollars!"
The audience erupted. People cursed him openly, yet no one could look away from the stage.
The host smiled. "And now for our third deadly question." He paused dramatically before continuing. "Mr. Frost. Ms. Sinclair. What was the most outrageous and shameless thing the two of you ever did during your affair?"
Mara's eyes immediately lit up. She snatched the microphone before Lachlan could answer. "Oh, this one is definitely mine." A smug smile spread across her face. "The craziest time was the night Lachlan proposed to Celine."
My heart clenched. That night, I had spent three hours in the kitchen preparing a candlelit dinner for him.
Mara looked at my pale face and smiled even wider. "We'd already had our fun at the bridal shop that afternoon, but Lachlan wasn't satisfied. So that night, I went straight to your apartment."
Her gaze dripped with malice. "You were in the kitchen cooking steaks with the range hood running." She laughed. "And while you were busy cooking, Lachlan and I were on your leather sofa in the living room."
Lachlan burst out laughing. "You have no idea how comfortable that sofa was." He shook his head as if reliving a fond memory. "You were chopping onions in the kitchen and shouting over to ask if I wanted black pepper." A grin spread across his face. "Mara had me so distracted I could barely answer. I just kept mumbling random responses to keep you from getting suspicious."
Mara eagerly jumped in. "And when you thought he sounded strange, you actually brought him a cup of warm water." She laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. "You stood there with a glass of warm water, acting like the devoted wife. I was hiding behind the curtains trying not to laugh."
The memory flashed through my mind. Lachlan's face had been flushed. His hair had been a mess. I had even touched his forehead and asked whether he was coming down with a fever.
Now I knew better. It hadn't been a fever at all.
Before I could stop myself, I slapped Lachlan across the face. I pointed at him. "You two are disgusting."
Lachlan instantly surged to his feet, ready to retaliate. The security guards moved in before he could. His expression darkened, but he sat back down.
That was Lachlan in a nutshell. He only ever picked on people he thought he could intimidate. I couldn't believe it had taken me seven years to see him for what he really was.
Mara barely reacted to the slap. Instead, she shrugged. "Relax. The best part hasn't even happened yet."
A ripple of unease swept through the audience.
Mara smiled. "We deliberately hid your spare phone beneath the sofa cushion and turned on the voice recorder."
The crowd fell silent.
"While we were together, we listened to you singing in the kitchen while washing vegetables." She laughed. "It almost felt like you were providing the soundtrack for us."
The audience exploded.
"What the hell is wrong with this guy?"
"He cheated on her in her own home on the night he proposed, and they even recorded it? That's beyond messed up."
"And she's actually proud of it? I've never seen anyone so shameless in my life."
The boos grew louder. Neither Mara nor Lachlan showed the slightest hint of shame. If anything, Lachlan looked proud of himself. To him, being able to deceive and manipulate women was something worth bragging about.
Lachlan rolled his eyes at the crowd. "You people don't get it. It's called excitement."
He leaned back casually. "Celine's steak was terrible that night anyway. It was so overcooked it could've passed for shoe leather." He laughed. "But we were having a great time in the living room."
My stomach turned. I stared at the man I had once planned to spend my life with. He felt like a stranger.
"Lachlan." My voice was calm. "Were you proud of yourself? You took advantage of my love and lied to me for years. You ate the food I cooked. You slept in the bed I paid for. And all the while, you were betraying me with another woman."
I looked him straight in the eye. "Didn't that ever disgust you?"
Lachlan snorted. "Disgusting?" His expression turned cold. "Being poor is disgusting."
He pointed at me. "Don't blame me for being ruthless. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for not being able to keep me."
He smiled smugly. "Once I win the ten million, I'm going shopping in Pariston. Then I'm taking a luxury vacation in Maldova."
"As for you?" His eyes swept over me. "You can stay in that lousy apartment and cry into your precious leather sofa."
The host watched him with an expression that almost looked amused. Then he glanced at the lie detector. "The answer has once again been verified as truthful. Congratulations, Mr. Frost. Your total winnings have now reached six million dollars."
Lachlan jumped to his feet. He grabbed Mara and kissed her again. The two of them celebrated as though victory were already theirs.
I watched them quietly. Then a cold smile curved my lips. "You really think you're walking out of here with that ten million dollars?" I asked.
