Aurora's POV
“Why did Mr. Patrick cancel all his appointments for today? Is he sick?” I heard the receptionist talking with a man who was standing in front of her desk.
Sick? That too Asher? Last morning he was so busy with his girlfriend. Probably he got tired after some making out.
Well, I was standing at the reception but she was busy chit-chatting.
I looked around the building. It was so huge. I wonder where the HR department is as I remember I was asked to go there first to show my letter to them.
“It doesn't seem so. He is sitting in his cabin and doing some work. Well, none of our concern. You tell me who is the new person going to join today?” He asked.
“Someone named Aurora Carter, she is a university student,” she said, digging her eyes in her laptop.
“Bad for her,” he said with a laugh and turned towards me.
In the meantime, I moved towards her ignoring that man, and said, “Hello, I am Aurora Carter. Can you tell me where HR is?”
That man’s face got pale, so the receptionist.
“Go to the left and the first room is the HR,” she said, composing her face.
I hummed moving towards the left but not before giving a final glance to them.
Some minutes later,
“Here is your identity card,” Kathleen said as soon as I reached the HR office.
Kathleen is one of the team members of the HR departments. She is a blonde lady who is in her mid-forties.
To my surprise, she is a sweet woman unlike what I have seen in the dramas. Well, she made me sign some documents with patience as I had so many questions, however, instead of getting annoyed with me, she cleared my doubts.
“Never lose your card as it is not only your card but also it is your entry pass. With this pass, you can go to any of the cabins,” Kathleen said as I was looking at my card with a small smile and tears in my eyes.
Day and night I have dreamt about this day. So I am a bit emotional.
Well, today is my first day at the job. I just can't explain how nervous I am. I just hope I can work great here without inviting trouble for myself.
“All the best, Ms. Carter. I hope you are going to work here for a longer period,” she said, making me more nervous.
I gave her a small nod and looked around myself wondering where I should go.
“s**t! I forgot you are new. You don't even know Mr. Patrick's cabin,” she said, reading my expression.
“Yes, just tell me where I have to go,” I asked with nervousness.
“Hang on! Carlos will show you the way and also he will train you for your work. You must not know but you need some training so you can understand your work,” she said.
I didn't tell her that I know about this, as I thought she might get offended. So I only hummed.
“Well, before you can impress Mr. Patrick with your dedication, you have to impress Carlos. He is such a serious and wicked man,” Kathleen pressed her lips together to control her smile.
“Carlos?” I muttered with some confusion.
“Carlos Gilbert, he only trained Mr. Patrick's assistant, though none of his trainees managed to work there for more than two months. However, we can't blame him. It's only because of Mr. Patrick. He gives hard times to his employees,” Kathleen chuckled, shrugging.
“You are making my heart pounder. It is my first job, I am already scared, don't increase it,” I said, biting my lips.
“Oh! Again sorry, well, Ms. Carter, you don't have to worry much as I heard you are selected by Mr. Patrick only. So I guess you must be talented though you are the youngest employees in our company,” Kathleen said with a small smile.
“So be comfortable here,” she said.
I hummed, locking my strand behind my earlobe. Soon a man in his fifties came towards Kathleen and me.
“Good morning, Carlos. Meet Aurora Carter, our new colleague, and Mr. Patrick's new secretary,” Kathleen said.
“Good morning, Kate and Ms. Carter. It's nice to see a young face after a long time,” he extended his hand towards me.
“Good morning, Mr. Gilbert. It's nice to meet you. I hope to learn a lot from you,” I said, shaking my hand with him.
“Do you know Ms. Carter, you are the luckiest person here?” He said.
I wonder what he means as I don't find myself lucky at all.
“First of all, you are selected by the boss directly, and second, I am going to teach you with dedication as I liked your file. So I hope you would like to be the same in your professional life, bright and hardworking,” he said as I negatively shook my head.
“I am not going to disappoint you,” I sighed in relief.
“Well, let me first give you a tour of the company while doing so I would make you understand your work,” he said, walking along with me.
As we were walking around, I was looking at the employees. They all were busy with something.
“Asher likes pin drop silence, so instead of gossiping around, his employees only work. So I can assure you one thing here, no employees will bully you or poke their nose in your business,” Carlos said.
“But yes there is always an exception, so if you run into any exception, you can complain to HR. They will take care of the matter without disclosing your name,” he said.
His words were not only comforting but also they were encouraging me to be strong.
“Well, Ms. Carter, you have seen Mr. Patrick's cabin already. So I won't show you that but I have to tell you something,” Carlos said, halting near Asher’s cabin.
“Asher comes around 10:00 am, so you always come at 9:30 am. After coming, you have to check his schedule and mail it to him, and also, once Asher comes, he likes to drink black coffee,” Carlos paused and turned towards me.
“If you see something going in his cabin, you are supposed to keep your lips sealed. No matter what it is that. If it comes out you have spilled anything, you would face the consequences,” Carlos said without any expression and that scared me like hell.
I mean I am sensing he is indicating towards something huge that no one is supposed to know.
“Except it, you only need to work smartly,” he added as I hummed.
**************
It was almost evening, I was still with Carlos. He was making me understand my work.
“Over for today, you can come tomorrow,” Carlos said, standing.
I hummed, standing, and turned to go but stopped by him who said, “Give this file to Asher and tell him that he has to sign on it.”
“And it is urgent, so don't slack off from it,” Carlos arched his brows.
“Am I supposed to speak in this tone with him? Won't he fire me?” I narrowed my eyes.
“Let me tell you a secret,” Carlos crossed his arms across his chest, leaning against the wall.
“Asher hates to be controlled but then if someone tries to control him, he takes it as a challenge. So if you want to stay here for longer than others, challenge him at each level,” Carlos said, confusing me.
“Did you give this idea to all?” I asked, biting my inner cheeks.
“Do you know what happens to those who lose their job here?” Carlos bowed his head and chuckled saying further, “They can't work at other places because of the high expectations that feel here. So either they end up working in small companies or not working at all.”
“Moreover, Ms. Carter, after getting fired from here, it is not easy to get the work. You are young, so let's not waste your life. I hope to see you resigning someday, not getting fired up. Of course, you should resign for something better,” he said.
I stared at him for a few seconds and then hummed.
Some minutes later, I was standing in front of Asher's cabin and wondering what he was going to say after seeing me. I mean last morning, we met each other but I didn't tell him about my decision to join early.
I am sure he is going to taunt me now.
However, I knocked and entered after listening to the response. He was facing his back to me, and standing, keeping his hands in his pockets.
“Welcome, Ms. Carter. I hope you had a nice time here,” he said.
His voice was somewhat different than usual yet it was familiar.
“What happened Ms. Carter? Is something wrong?”
Asher turned towards me and gave me a smirk.
However, his smirk was weird and so was his expression. I mean I have seen how Asher smirks, his eyes became like devil's eyes but this time it is shining.
He seems to be happy for some reason and his shoulders are slouched. Asher always stands straight.
Most importantly his tone is British, not American just like Alvis. What am I doing right now? Why am I acting like this?
“Ohh! You are here because of this file, give this to me,” Asher said, breaking my trances.
I hummed, extending the file, and said, “Mr. Gilbert said that it is urgent, so sign it and give it to me. I would have to give it to him.”
“Sign now? I will do it later as I would need to read, right?” Asher said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Okay!” I muttered, turned to go.
“Shall I drop you, Ms. Carter?” Asher asked in a soft tone.
“No, but you seem different today,” I said, leaving from there.
To be continued.
