The Men Who Came for Daniel

1068 Words
"RUN, AMARA!" Vanessa's scream cut through the chaos like a blade. My body reacted before my mind could catch up. One second I was standing frozen on the sidewalk. The next, I was running. The world became a blur of movement. Footsteps. Car horns. Shouting. Fear. Raw, uncontrollable fear. Vanessa gripped my wrist tightly as she pulled me through the crowd. People turned to stare. Some stepped aside. Others simply watched. Nobody knew they were witnessing the collapse of my entire reality. Behind us, I heard Daniel shouting. Not at me. At the men. "Stop them!" The words made me glance back. A mistake. One of the men had reached Daniel. The impact was brutal. A punch landed across his face. Daniel stumbled backward into a parked car. Gasps erupted from nearby pedestrians. Another man moved toward him immediately. Fast. Professional. Not random street violence. Not robbery. These men had come specifically for him. And suddenly one terrifying thought entered my mind. Who exactly did I marry? Vanessa yanked my arm. "Don't look back!" "But Daniel—" "Forget Daniel!" The anger in her voice shocked me. For the first time, her composure cracked. She looked genuinely terrified. We turned down a side street. Then another. My lungs burned. My heart felt ready to explode. Finally, Vanessa pulled me into a narrow alley hidden between two buildings. We stopped. Both breathing hard. The sounds of the city felt distant now. Muted. Safe. For the moment. I bent forward, trying to catch my breath. "What the hell is happening?" I demanded. Vanessa pressed herself against the wall and peeked around the corner. Only after several seconds did she relax slightly. Then she looked at me. And I immediately knew I wasn't going to like whatever came next. "They found him." My frustration exploded. "WHO FOUND HIM?" She hesitated. Too long. Then finally answered. "The people he's been hiding from." My stomach dropped. "What people?" She looked away briefly. And that was answer enough. Whatever this was... It was serious. Very serious. "Vanessa." My voice hardened. "No more half-truths." She closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again, they looked exhausted. Like someone carrying a secret for too many years. "You deserve the truth." "Then tell me." Silence. Then she nodded. Slowly. Carefully. "As much as I hate Daniel right now..." Her voice trembled slightly. "...he wasn't always like this." I folded my arms. Listening. Because whether I liked it or not, she held pieces of a puzzle I desperately needed. "I met him seven years ago." Her gaze drifted somewhere far away. "He was ambitious." "Smart." "Charismatic." "He could walk into a room and make everyone believe in him." That sounded familiar. Too familiar. Because it was exactly the man I thought I married. Vanessa continued. "But ambition became obsession." My stomach tightened. "He started working with people who offered fast money." I frowned. "What kind of people?" Another hesitation. Then: "The kind you don't walk away from." A cold chill moved through me. The kind you don't walk away from. Those words carried weight. Danger. History. Consequences. Suddenly the men attacking Daniel didn't seem random anymore. "Are you saying he's involved in crime?" Vanessa laughed bitterly. "That's the problem." "What?" "We don't know how involved." The answer frustrated me even more. Nothing was clear. Everything felt hidden beneath another layer. Another lie. Another secret. I paced the alley. Trying to think. Trying to breathe. Trying to understand how my cheating husband had somehow transformed into the center of a nightmare. Then my phone vibrated. Both of us froze. I looked down. Daniel. Calling. Again. Vanessa immediately shook her head. "Don't answer." My thumb hovered over the screen. The phone kept ringing. And ringing. And ringing. Then it stopped. Only to start again immediately. My pulse quickened. "He won't stop." Vanessa's expression darkened. "No." She looked directly into my eyes. "He won't." The way she said it unsettled me. Then another message arrived. From Daniel. I opened it. My blood turned cold. Where are you? A second message followed instantly. Answer me. Then another. You're not safe with her. My eyes moved to Vanessa automatically. She noticed. "What did he say?" I showed her. Her jaw tightened. Then she laughed softly. Not because it was funny. Because it wasn't. It was the laugh of someone who had seen this before. "He always says that." I blinked. "What?" "That you're not safe with me." She crossed her arms. "That's exactly what he told me about someone else years ago." Silence. A heavy silence. One that carried implications I didn't want to explore. How many women had been part of Daniel's life? How many lies existed before me? How many stories was I only now discovering? Then another message appeared. This one different. Short. Urgent. Look behind you. My heart stopped. Slowly. Very slowly. I turned around. Nothing. Just the alley. Brick walls. Dumpsters. Shadow. Then I noticed it. A small black object attached beneath a nearby drainpipe. Tiny. Almost invisible. But definitely there. Vanessa's face drained of color the moment she saw it. "No." "What is it?" She moved closer. Carefully. Then whispered: "A camera." My stomach dropped. "What?" A camera. Watching. Recording. Tracking. The realization hit me all at once. The café. The car. The phone calls. The men. None of it felt random anymore. It felt orchestrated. Like someone had been watching this entire situation unfold. And maybe not just today. Maybe for much longer. Vanessa stepped backward. Suddenly nervous again. "We need to leave." "Now." I stared at the camera. Questions flooded my mind. Who installed it? Who was watching? And why? Then my phone rang again. Daniel. For the third time. This time, I answered. Immediately. "Daniel." His breathing sounded rough. Painful. Like he'd been running. Or fighting. "Listen carefully." His voice was urgent. Far more urgent than before. "Leave that alley." My pulse jumped. "How do you know where I am?" A pause. Too short. Then: "Because they're watching you." My blood froze. The exact same fear I saw in Vanessa's face moments ago now echoed through his voice. For the first time since this nightmare began... Daniel sounded genuinely afraid for me. And that terrified me more than anything else. Because if both of them were scared... Then whoever was watching us was the real enemy. And they were already one step ahead.
