May’s Pov
It all began on a Wednesday morning. That morning was just like every other morning. Maybe that's why I didn't feel anything bad was going to happen. Maybe if that day had been any different, even in a little way, maybe I would have known something bad was going to happen , maybe I would have been able to save Karen. Maybe Karen would still be alive. Maybe.
But just like when bad things want to happen, we are oblivious of it until it's too late.
I woke at 7:00 am, my usual time for a school day. For some people, like my twin April, it is late and there won't be enough time to prepare for school, but for me it's more than enough because, unlike April, who has a ritual she does every morning before going to school, I have none, all I need to do is say my morning prayer, brush my teeth, take my bath and probably wash my ever straight blonde waist length hair, and just wear any cloth that my hands land on in my closet, which usually is my jean trouser and my hoodie . Finish. Done.
But April wakes up on a school day at precisely 05:40 am. She spends thirty minutes picking out her outfit, which is usually very fashionable. By 06:10, she takes twenty long minutes to bath, spends the remaining thirty minutes I use to sleep to do her make up.
I even remember feeling happy on that Wednesday because it was mum's off day.
And we had a family tradition we always did on mum's day off. The tradition was a thing we started nine years ago when dad left us for his new family with his then secretary who he is currently married to. Mum's off day was always our girls' bonding time. We talked about everything; boys, fashion, recipes, movies, dating and anything we could think of. We always did it together as a family, but this particular Wednesday was different because my eldest sister Summer had gone back to college. My family is made up of Mum, Summer; the first child, April and I.
As always, I am the last person to get to the dining room where we eat and waited for the school bus as April and I didn't have a car.
My Mom was already seated at the head of the dining table as always and April was seated at Summer's spot besides Mom since Summer was at college. I greeted my Mom and April and sat at the other side of Mom. We had our family morning prayer and we started eating breakfast. Being a family of females only, means talking was allowed during breakfast. So my Mom and April started talking about how we should spend our girl's time today. They talked about a lot of things, such as going to the movies or to the spa or the hair salon or shopping. They said a lot of things, half of which I didn't hear. I look at Mom and looked at April, really looked at both of them and wondered where the hell I got my looks and personality from because I don't look or act like them at all. They are both not that tall, both brunettes, with blue eyes and are both a little curvy. While I am blonde, tall and straight with green eyes, the only thing I got from them is my C-cups. They could both pass off as sisters, same with my elder sister Summer. They continued talking in the living room after breakfast as we waited for the school bus. Mom tried to include me in the conversation.
"What do you think, May? " Mom asked.
"Uhmm, about what? " I asked, since I had no idea what they had been talking about.
"We have decided to go to the spa," April said as she rolled her eyes.
''No, we have not, we are still deliberating on where to go and what to do", Mom said, drawing out the words.
" OK, I am fine with anywhere as long as it's not a waxing salon" I shudder thinking about the last time we went there at April's suggestion.
Mom looked at me. "Well, I think you should choose where we should go today, seeing as April and I always choose where we go. It's your turn today. So where should we go? "
I totally did not expect that " uhm, are you sure you want me to choose where we should go? My taste is different from yours and we all know I'm going to choose somewhere boring for you guys. So you guys should just pick somewhere you want to go and I go along"
April looked at Mom and at me and sighed.
" Fine, May gets to choose where we should go, but next time it's my turn."
"Wow, OK uhm, we could go to the museum or we could go to the library or we could go see a horror movie" I said, excited about the idea.
"But " April said, looking at me, "No, to the horror movies and a big capital letter NO to the museum. I mean, why would someone want to go to a museum to look at things?” She scrunches her nose at the word OLD.
"April, let your sister choose wherever she wants to go, so if she wants to go to a dumpster, then we will go with her. No objections. " Mom stated
.
"No, it’s fine.” I said, "let's go to the mall. There is a bookstore there I haven't been to"
"What?! a bookstore you haven't been to? Where on earth is there such a place", April said with fake shock and horror, which I believe is half true because she knows that I love reading and I have visited all the bookshops in willow town. Apparently, not all, since there is one new store in the mall. Not for long.
"It just opened this Monday. I was planning on going on Saturday but we can go today and we could go shopping from there ", I said, enticing her with her favorite activity. Shopping.
"Fine, let's go there. " she said with a sigh and an eye roll.
"Well, I am glad you could decide between yourselves like adults. I will come pick you guys from school so we can go from there" Mom said.
"Fine but---" May started but was interrupted by the arrival of the school bus.
We said goodbye to Mom with a promise to call our sister Summer and left for school by the bus.
