Paul, in walking gear, crossed the high moorland above the woods of Walden. He carried a map, binoculars and the theodolite. Half a mile behind him was a standing stone and, half a mile beyond that, the dark moortop mound of a tumulus. Ahead of him lay St Martin"s church at the edge of the moor above Walden. He checked the theodolite, making certain that the tumulus, stone and church were in line. “Perfect.” Eight years earlier, straight after university and before he entered the church, he had begun a career as a trainee surveyor.
