Chapter 14

1996 Words

Next morning Paul walked briskly through the woods of Walden to Olwen"s cottage. He knocked firmly on the door. There was no response. He tried the door handle, which yielded. He stepped into the house. He found himself in an old-fashioned kitchen. A peat fire burned in an old black kitchen range. “Okay, Olwen! Here I am!” he announced with a laugh of grim belligerence. “Are you coming out to play with me today? Or do you only come out when Sarah"s around?” Nothing happened. He walked through the ground-floor rooms, which were sparsely furnished with heavy old-fashioned furniture. “Olwen!” he called out. “Where are you?” Silence. He found a door which led to a staircase. He set off up the stairs. He walked from room to room on the first floor, the furniture again old dark and heavy.
