Chapter 2 Leaving

644 Words
He was silent for a moment before saying, "Yes." I calmly replied, "Okay." Before he could say anything else, I hung up. This was the first time I had ever been the one to hang up on him since we started dating. As emotions swirled inside me, I picked up my phone again, wanting to message Lucas on w******p and tell him that I knew everything. But after typing and deleting my words over and over, I still didn't know what to say. In the end, all I did was change our couple profile picture. It had taken me forever to convince Lucas to use one with me. Thinking back now, he probably didn't want Natalie to see it. Well, now he finally got what he wanted. I started packing up the things from our shared apartment. Even though we were in a long-distance relationship and he didn't come here often, a lot of his stuff was still here. I used to love this cozy little place we had together. I had decorated it myself, filling it with things that made it warm and inviting. And now, I was the one taking everything down. Aside from a small pang of regret, my heart felt nothing. It was like I had taken a bullet—dead on the inside. As I was packing, a new email popped up in my inbox. It was anonymous, but the sender's ID was Natalie. Somehow, I still clicked on it. The email contained only one sentence. Natalie: Has he ever done this for you? Attached was a photo. It was taken in Lucas's bedroom. Natalie sat on a chair, soaking wet, wrapped in nothing but a ridiculously short towel. Lucas, wearing just a bathrobe, was kneeling on one knee in front of her. One of her feet rested on his knee as he carefully painted her toenails. I immediately replied. Evelyn: "A w***e and a dog—what a perfect match." Then I blocked her. A few hours later, I finished packing. I couldn't stand staying here for another second. I called my best friend, Vivian Ross. "Vivian, I need to crash at your place for a few days." Vivian didn't know what had happened yet. She groaned, "Oh, so now you remember you have a best friend? Took you long enough, you traitor." I sniffled. "I'm sorry... I won't do it again. I just broke up with him—no, actually, I'm calling off the engagement." I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. I told her everything that had happened tonight. Vivian was furious. She cursed out Lucas and Natalie like they were the worst scumbags on earth. "Don't worry, babe, I'm coming to get you right now." Half an hour later, Vivian pulled up in her car. As she helped me load my bags into the trunk, she continued cursing them out, venting on my behalf. She was so over-the-top that I actually started laughing. Maybe my boyfriend sucked, but at least I had an amazing best friend. Just then, my phone rang again. I didn't even check who it was before answering. The moment I picked up, I heard Lucas's anxious voice. "Evelyn, do you know what size a girl who weighs 90 pounds wears?" Before I could respond, Vivian snatched the phone from my hand and snapped, "Why the hell are you even asking? Get lost, you cheating piece of trash! Stay the hell away from Evelyn!" Then she hung up. I stared at her in shock before bursting into laughter and throwing myself into her arms. "You're a legend, Vivian! You said exactly what I was thinking!" Vivian grinned. "Easy work, babe. Easy work." As she started the car, she glanced at me, her expression turning serious. "Does your mom know you're calling off the engagement? She's not gonna take this well, is she?"
