The black sedan rolled to a stop, the engine cutting out with a sputtering cough that mirrored the sinking hearts of its occupants. The doors creaked open, and the two men―one fat, one thin―stumbled back onto the driveway of the Lacy villa. Their faces were twisted in expressions of misery and confusion, like children who had been caught stealing candy and then ordered back to the scene of the crime by an invisible, terrifying parent.
