THE TOWN THAT WAS
The first people they saw the next morning as Brick and his Guards led them out of the basement were Jonny and Miriam. They too looked pale and shaken.
“Are they taking you to the Great Hall as well?” asked Sam.
“I’ve never been an enemy of Thistown!” Jonny yelled. “And I never will be!”
“Shut up and stand still!” shouted Brick. “Chain them!”
The five of them were manacled together with chains round their wrists and ankles.
“Now take them out!”
They were pulled out through the great doors of the Town Hall and on to the steps. To their surprise there was a huge crowd of uniformed Fortunates spread out on the Green waiting for them. They immediately began to hiss and jeer.
“Enemies!”
“Throw them into the corn!”
Belle was frightened and she tried to hide behind Sam
