THE GREAT CONSTRUCTION A few days later, with time weighing heavily on his hands, Sam walked down Avenue A. He stopped, amazed. There in front of him, as if it had grown up out of nothing, stood the huge structure of the new Sports Stadium covered in wooden scaffolding and tarpaulin. Every single carpenter who wasn’t working on the Great Hall had been ordered to join the workforce. They worked hard and fast. Carts carried wood from the forest on Avenues P, Q, O and N, and Sam had heard that some of the carpenters had even wanted to cut down the great oaks on the Green. The Great Hall further down the Avenue still wasn’t finished and stone was still being quarried from the Forty-fifth Circle. There seemed to be hammering and nailing and digging and cries of ”Timber!” wherever he looked. T
