Chapter Fourteen Tuesday, 4:50 p.m. Detective Sharp shouldered his way between Tara and me to follow the officer downstairs. He handed back my satchel as he passed. He hesitated a moment before letting go of the strap, and I noticed his fingers were clenched. What did he expect to find downstairs? Tara and I exchanged a silent look and followed after him. It wasn’t as if he had asked us to stay behind, and I really wanted to know what the officer had uncovered. I made sure to keep a couple of steps between me and the detective, just in case this was the time one of my feet got tripped up by the slat stairs.
