SETTING: Bennet Biotech Conference Hall
The main hall of Bennet Hall had been converted into a sleek, minimalist
arena. The glass panels on either side of the stage, which stretched across the
space, showed the city skyline. Press chairs were neatly arranged in precise
rows, while cameras and microphones were set up like predators in a jungle,
ready to capture every word and every stride.
Standing side by side were two people who represented opposite poles of
control.
His expression was chiseled out of stone, and Damien Vale was wearing a well-
tailored black suit. Summer Bennet stood next to him, with the same elegance,
measured, and unyielding as ever. Although everything around them was in
chaos, but within, they were completely in control of themselves.
There was a sense of expectation in the air rather than anger. The reporters
rustling papers, grumbling and shifting camera angles caused the room to
tremble.
She avoided looking at him. Not once. She continued to focus on her notes. A
silent warning that she was deadly, well- prepared and cunning.
After watching her for longer than was necessary, Damien clasped his hands
softly in front of him, fingers intertwined. Although it appeared so natural, the
movement wasn’t. It was self- control.
The middle-aged moderator cleared his throat, his words chipped. “Thank you
for being here with us today, ladies and gentlemen. We’re here to discuss the
recent reports that allude to unrest and speculation around the Vale-Bennet
merger. The principals are pleased to be here to respond to your questions”.
He looked at Summer and Damien. "Thank you for both executives attendance
this morning."
Damien's hands were still loosely linked in front of him, fingers entwined.
Summer put her hands on the podium.
Damien had a steady, silky voice. "Thank you. Let me make a few clarifications
before the questioning start: rumors and conjecture are not facts. Business
stability and shareholder value continue to be our top priorities”.
Summer's eyes sparkled as she c****d her chin slightly. “Furthermore, although
speculation is amusing, neither Vale Enterprises nor Bennet Biotech are
influenced by it. Let's get started now”.
A whisper echoed through the crowd.
"Mr. Vale. “Ms. Bennet. Recent reports have indicated that there may be a
personal scandal that has affected merger. How do you respond to allegations
that the leadership of the companies is unstable”. A reporter said in a smooth but
sour tone.
Damien spoke first, in a steady, composed tone. "The management teams and
internal processes of our organizations are aggressive. The strategic orientation
of Bennet Biotech and Vale Enterprises is not determined by personal matters.
Both businesses are operational and dedicated to their shareholders”.
The reporter leaned forward and pressed. "However, public opinion—
"
Damien calmly interrupted, "-isn't our business model." It is performance."
There were a few scattered giggles at that.
One of the young reporters persisted
“According to some, the recent headlines have shown that you two have a
personal commitment. Are those claims true?”
Slowly, Damien's jaw tightened. He took a moment to consider the words. "We're
worried about the businesses. Individual problems don't affect how the
operation is carried out. One must treat speculation as such”.
Summer's soothing voice. "We are more concerned with results than with
scandals."
The reporters exchanged glances, and for a brief while, the room fell silent as
everyone felt a subtle yet potent tension coming from the platform.
Once more, the moderator coughed. "Any other questions?".
At the rear, a reporter got up. "How do you intend to persuade the public and
investors that the merger is stable, based on media reports?".
Summer's voice was stiff and forceful. We want to show that we are stable and
confident in each other's leadership for the long run. A thorough communications
strategy is being put into action, which includes open reporting and quarterly
briefings”.
"Leadership focus remains unwavering," Damien stated plainly. “The businesses
have a strong commitment to operational integrity and shareholder value. All
measures have been implemented to ensure ongoing stability”.
Summer's tone was calm but firm in her response. "Any suggestion that
instability in leadership is the problem is misplaced; the teams have been
working hard."
The young reporter from before held out his hands once more. “What about
disputes within the company?. There are rumors that some executives from both
companies were completely against the merger”.
Damien's eyes became icy. "Internal discussions are a component of competent
governance, not a source of conflict. Every significant merger is subject to review.
Ours is no exception”.
“We appreciate different viewpoints,” Summer continued. “But the choice is still
ours”.
The last word hung in the air. Ours.
The journalists scribbled frantically.
With a questioning tone, an elderly journalist leaned forward and said, "If I may
ask, how do you achieve cooperation with all the tension between you?".
Damien glanced at Summer, and in that little instant, his expression softened,
displaying silent acknowledgement. "What we do is governed by professionalism.
We follow protocol and strategic directives”.
Summer let out a sigh. Operant effectiveness is not affected by personal conflicts.
That will never happen”.
The journalists wrote fervently. The camera flashes everywhere. There was
another query.
“Some experts are concerned about the stock decrease due to the media
exposure, Mr. Vale and Ms. Bennet. Assure investors that their confidence will
return”.
Damien answered abruptly. “The stock decline was a hasty reaction to rumors in
the media. Our rehabilitation plans are well-defined. Both businesses have the
resources and the plan in place to pursue long-term growth, and the quarter
estimates are sound”.
"We are briefing our investors openly," Summer stated. “Our leadership must be
trusted, and we are committed to demonstrating that stability with deeds rather
than words”.
A financial analyst submitted a query. “What do you both envision for the
combined businesses in five years?".
Summer came on, sure and steady. "Biotechnology innovation, sustainability,
and long-term leadership." We'll combine Bennet's technology with Vale's
infrastructure. The outcome—
“
"
—will define precision technology: global, accessible, efficient," Damien
interrupted.
They spoke in smooth, almost practiced sentences. They sounded more like allies
than rivals for the first time all morning.
Fleeting, but not unnoticed by everyone.
Quick-fire questions about operating plans, shareholder confidence, and strategic
outlooks were asked by the reporter. Damien and Summer answered together,
taking turns with exactly the right touch. Their professional aptitude was
absolute. And yet beneath that polish, tension seethed. Every knowing glance,
every tone nicely calibrated, bore unspoken history.
The moderator gave a nod. "Thank you, Ms. Bennet and Mr. Vale. That concludes
today’s briefing”.
The flashes were unrelenting, the applause courteous.
As they left the stage, they were all more conscious of one another than anyone
else and of the world watching. For now, the press conference was over.
However, the war—the tenuous balance of rivalry, pride, and something neither
of them would acknowledge—had just begun.
Backstage, Damien stopped talking softly. “You performed admirably. Better
what I expected”.
Summer's eyes recorded him for an instant "And you did not embarrass me. More
than I was afraid of."
Beyond the facade of Bennet Biotech, Manhattan glittered blind to the drama
inside. Yet for Damien and Summer, the press conference had revealed more than
corporate stability. It highlighted the battle clearly far from won and between
them, chemistry pulsed alive and impossible to deny.
