Chapter 11: Into the Lion’s Den

The sewer tunnel reeked of rust and stagnant water. Kai wiped grime from his cheek, muttering under his breath. "This better be worth it." Nova, a few steps ahead, adjusted the holographic display on her wrist. “Would you rather walk through the front door?” Kai smirked. “I mean, it’d be more fun.” Zane rolled his eyes. “Less talking, more moving.” The team pressed forward, each step bringing them closer to their target—Echelon’s secondary data hub. If Nova’s intel was right, breaking into this facility would give them access to the main network, letting them expose Echelon’s crimes to the world. But if they were caught? There wouldn’t be a second chance. Breaching the Fortress Aria checked her earpiece. “Everyone in position?” Riven’s voice came through the comms. “We’re set. You have ten minutes before the next security sweep. Move fast.” They reached a heavy steel grate, blocking their way forward. Nova pulled out a compact device, attaching it to the metal. “Give me a sec.” The device hummed. Sparks flickered. Then—click. The grate unlocked. Nova grinned. “We’re in.” They climbed through, emerging into the facility’s maintenance sector. Pipes hissed, vents rumbled, and red emergency lights flickered along the walls. Kai cracked his knuckles. “Now the real fun starts.” Silent Takedown The team moved with precision, sticking to the shadows as they navigated the corridors. A lone guard rounded a corner. Before he could react, Zane grabbed him, covering his mouth and dragging him into the darkness. A quiet thud followed. “Nice,” Kai whispered. Luna frowned. “Let’s just get this over with.” They reached a security checkpoint—a reinforced door with biometric scanners. Nova knelt beside the control panel, fingers flying over her terminal. “Almost… got it…” A warning beep echoed through the hallway. Nova froze. “Crap.” “Problem?” Aria asked. Nova’s face paled. “I tripped a silent alarm.” Kai tensed. “So much for stealth.” Heavy footsteps echoed in the distance. Zane cracked his knuckles. “Good. I was getting bored.” Against the Odds The first enforcer appeared, clad in Echelon’s signature black armor. Before he could react, Kai dashed forward, striking him with a rapid series of blows. The enforcer collapsed. Two more appeared. Then five. Then ten. Luna threw up a barrier as gunfire erupted. Zane charged through, his strength turning every punch into a shockwave. Aria focused, time slowing around her as she weaved between enemies, striking with precise, unstoppable force. Nova cursed as she worked frantically on the control panel. “A little more time would be great!” Kai flipped over an enforcer, kicking him into another. “Yeah, we’ll get right on that.” The battle intensified. Zane ripped a metal door from its hinges, using it as a shield before hurling it like a battering ram. Luna reinforced their defenses, blocking incoming shots with shimmering walls of energy. Aria ducked and dodged, striking with fluid precision. But she could feel the strain—stopping time took effort, and she couldn’t keep it up forever. Nova’s terminal beeped. “Got it!” she shouted. The door slid open. “Move!” Aria ordered. They rushed inside, sealing the door behind them. For a brief moment, there was silence. Then the alarms blared. The Truth Revealed The data core hummed with energy, a massive supercomputer stretching across the chamber. Nova wasted no time, plugging in her terminal and bypassing the firewalls. “This is it,” she muttered. “Everything Echelon doesn’t want the world to see.” Aria approached, watching as lines of encrypted data flooded the screen. “Can you decrypt it?” Nova smirked. “Please. Give me five minutes.” Zane stood guard by the door. “We don’t have five minutes.” Nova ignored him, typing faster. “Almost… there.” A final keystroke. The screen flickered. Files unlocked. And then— Aria’s blood ran cold. On the screen were hundreds of files. Footage, reports, experiments. People. Not just them. Others. Neo-Eden was full of people with latent abilities, and Echelon had been tracking them for years. Some were captured. Experimented on. Some… didn’t survive. Luna covered her mouth. “How many?” Nova scrolled. “Thousands.” Aria’s fists clenched. This wasn’t just about them anymore. This was a war. Kai looked at Aria, his usual smirk gone. “We need to show the world.” Nova nodded, sending the files to a secure offsite server. “Already on it.” The system beeped. Then went dark. Nova’s fingers froze over the keys. “Uh… guys?” The room’s temperature seemed to drop. A voice echoed through the speakers. “You’ve come far.” Aria’s heart stopped. The Executioner. A security feed flickered on, revealing his masked face. He wasn’t alone. Behind him, dozens of elite enforcers stood ready. “But this is where it ends.” The doors burst open. Nowhere to Run Gunfire erupted. The team scattered, dodging incoming fire as enforcers flooded the room. Zane charged headfirst into battle, taking down enemies with sheer force. Kai moved like lightning, striking and disappearing before they could react. Luna reinforced their cover, blocking attacks as best as she could. Nova clutched her terminal. “I need thirty more seconds to finish the upload!” Aria fought with everything she had, her body moving faster than thought. Time bent and twisted around her as she struck enemy after enemy. But then— A heavy blow sent her crashing to the ground. The Executioner loomed over her. “You’re too late.” He raised his weapon— And time froze. Aria gasped for breath, pushing her power to its limits. She could see everything. Every bullet, every enemy, every movement. Her vision blurred at the edges. Her head pounded. But she only needed a second. With everything she had left, she moved. She twisted, dodging the Executioner’s strike, grabbing Nova’s wrist. Then— Time snapped forward. The room exploded into chaos. Aria pulled Nova toward the exit. “Did you get it?!” Nova panted. “It’s uploading now! We just need to—” Boom! A massive explosion shook the facility. The ceiling cracked. The walls trembled. Riven’s voice crackled through the comms. “Fall back! Now!” There was no choice. The mission was complete. They ran. The last thing Aria saw before escaping into the tunnels was the Executioner, standing in the flames, watching them go. The Fallout Hours later, in a hidden safehouse, the team gathered around Nova’s screen. The files had uploaded. And the world was watching. News outlets, underground networks, citizen broadcasts—everyone was seeing the truth. The people of Neo-Eden were waking up. Zane smirked. “We did it.” Kai exhaled. “Yeah, but Echelon won’t take this lightly.” Luna nodded. “They’ll come for us.” Aria stared at the screen. The war had just begun. She turned to her team. “Then we’ll be ready.” No more running. No more hiding. It was time to take the fight to Echelon.
