It is about becoming capable of creating value, solving problems, serving people, managing resources, building relationships, and creating something that can continue growing over time. The successful businessman understands that every great company begins with an idea, but an idea alone is not enough. It must be combined with action, discipline, knowledge, patience, courage, financial responsibility, and consistent execution. You do not need to begin with a huge office, expensive equipment, hundreds of employees, or millions in capital. You can begin with what you have, where you are, and with the knowledge available to you. The goal is not merely to start a business. The goal is to build a business that creates value, produces sustainable profit, serves customers well, creates opportunities for others, and gives you the ability to build the future you want. Opening of the book Writing BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN A Practical Guide to Building Wealth, Discipline, Leadership, and a Sustainable Business By Obiora Makata INTRODUCTION Every successful business begins with a decision. Sometimes that decision is made in a small room with little money. Sometimes it is made after someone loses a job, discovers a problem that needs solving, notices an opportunity that others have ignored, or simply decides that they want more control over their future. Whatever the circumstances, entrepreneurship begins when a person stops waiting for the perfect opportunity and starts asking a different question: “What value can I create?” This question is at the heart of successful business. Many people want to become wealthy, but wanting wealth is not the same thing as understanding how wealth is created. Some people believe that becoming a businessman means opening a shop, selling products, making money, and becoming rich. In reality, successful business is much deeper. A businessman must understand people. He must understand money. He must understand markets, competition, marketing, sales, leadership, technology, risk, negotiation, and human behavior. Most importantly, he must understand himself. Business will test your patience. It will test your discipline. It will test your ability to make decisions when you do not have complete information. It will test how you react when customers reject your product, when an employee disappoints you, when a competitor becomes stronger, when sales fall, or when a plan that looked perfect fails. This is why becoming successful in business is not simply about learning how to start a company. It is about becoming the kind of person who can build, manage, adapt, and grow a company. You may start with one customer. You may start with one product. You may start from your home. You may start with a small amount of money. That does not determine your final destination. Your knowledge, decisions, habits, relationships, discipline, and willingness to improve will have a much greater influence on where you eventually arrive. This book is designed for the person who wants to start from the beginning and develop the knowledge required to become a successful businessman. You will learn how to identify opportunities, research markets, create business plans, manage money, attract customers, sell effectively, build a brand, hire employees, lead people, handle failure, use technology, manage risk, and grow a business. But there is an important principle you should remember throughout this book: Do not read merely to become knowledgeable. Read to become capable. Knowledge that never becomes action has limited value. If you learn about marketing but never market your product, you have information but not experience. If you learn about sales but never speak to customers, you understand theory but not selling. If you learn about financial management but never keep proper records, you know the words but have not developed the habit. Business rewards execution. You will make mistakes. That is normal. You will make decisions that later prove to be wrong. That is normal. You will experience rejection. That is normal. You may lose money. That can happen. The important thing is to turn every experience into information. A mistake should teach you. A failure should make you wiser. A difficult customer should teach you about customer service. A bad investment should teach you about risk. A failed product should teach you about the market. A successful sale should teach you why the customer bought. The businessman who continuously learns from experience becomes increasingly difficult to defeat. Your journey may begin with a small dream, but never underestimate the power of consistent improvement. A business does not become great in one day. It becomes great through thousands of decisions made correctly over time. So begin where you are. Learn. Observe. Plan. Act. Measure. Improve. Repeat. That is the journey. And that journey begins now.
