For the first time since she had met him, Alexander looked genuinely uncomfortable. “That isn't something you need to know.” Emily's eyes narrowed. “You brought me into your life. You married me. And now you're telling me there are promises being made behind my back?” Alexander stepped closer. “Emily, there are things about my family that you don't understand.” “Then explain them.” “I can't.” She laughed bitterly. “Of course you can't.” Emily turned away from him and walked toward the window. Outside, the city glittered beneath the night sky. Everything looked beautiful from the penthouse, but she suddenly felt trapped. She had entered this marriage believing she knew exactly what she was doing. She had been wrong. Alexander watched her silently. “You should sleep,” he finally said. Emily turned around. “I don't think I can.” “Why?” “Because I just realized I don't know the man I married.” Something changed in Alexander's expression. For a moment, his cold exterior disappeared. “You will,” he whispered. Emily frowned. “What?” “You will know me eventually.” Before she could answer, his phone rang. Alexander looked at the screen, and all the color seemed to leave his face. He immediately walked away to answer it. “Yes?” Emily couldn't hear the person on the other end, but she could see the tension building in his shoulders. “What do you mean she's back?” Emily froze. Alexander turned his back toward her. “No. She can't come here.” A pause. “I don't care what she wants. She stays away from Emily.” Emily's heart began beating faster. Who was he talking about? And why did this mysterious woman have anything to do with her? Alexander ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket. Emily stared at him. “Who was that?” “No one.” “You said someone was back.” Alexander's jaw tightened. “You heard too much.” “I heard enough.” He walked toward her. “Emily, listen to me carefully. Whatever happens, you stay away from this.” “From what?” “My past.” She shook her head. “You can't tell me to stay away from your past when your past is already standing inside our marriage.” Alexander stopped in front of her. His eyes were intense. “You don't understand how dangerous this can become.” “Then make me understand.” He said nothing. Emily took a step backward. “Is she your ex-wife?” “No.” “Your ex-girlfriend?” “No.” “Then who is she?” Alexander looked toward the window. “She is the reason I stopped believing in love.” Emily's anger disappeared for a moment. She had expected another secret, another lie. She hadn't expected that. “Did she hurt you?” Alexander didn't answer. Emily watched him carefully. Behind the powerful billionaire everyone feared, she suddenly saw a wounded man. A man who had been carrying something heavy for years. But before she could say anything else, the sound of a car stopping outside caught their attention. Alexander looked down. A black car had pulled into the driveway. His expression changed instantly. “Stay here,” he ordered. Emily followed him toward the door. “Alexander—” “Stay here.” He left the room. Emily waited for several seconds. Then curiosity overcame her. She quietly followed. At the bottom of the staircase, she saw Alexander standing near the entrance. The front doors opened. A woman stepped inside. She was tall, elegant, and dressed in a long black coat. Alexander stared at her as if he had just seen a ghost. The woman smiled. “Hello, Alexander.” Emily's stomach tightened. The woman slowly turned her head. Her eyes landed on Emily. For several seconds, neither woman spoke. Then the stranger smiled. “So this is the wife.” Alexander immediately stepped between them. “You shouldn't be here.” The woman ignored him. Instead, she looked directly at Emily. “You don't know what you've married into, do you?” Emily felt a chill rEmily felt a chill run through her. Alexander's expression hardened. “Leave.” “I will leave when I have said what I came here to say.” Emily looked between them. “What is going on?” Alexander turned toward her. “Emily, go upstairs.” “No.” His eyes widened slightly. “No?” “I am tired of being told to leave every time there is something you don't want me to hear.” The woman gave a quiet laugh. “She has more courage than I expected.” Alexander ignored her. “Emily, please.” The softness in his voice stopped her for a moment. She had rarely heard him say please. Before she could answer, the woman stepped closer. “My name is Victoria.” Emily stared at her. “Why are you here?” Victoria looked at Alexander. “Because he made a promise to your father.” Emily's heart stopped. “My father?” Alexander closed his eyes briefly. Victoria continued. “Your father and Alexander's father were business partners many years ago. But there was more to their relationship than business.” Emily shook her head. “I don't understand.” “You weren't supposed to,” Alexander said quietly. Victoria looked at him. “You kept the secret long enough.” Emily's voice trembled. “What secret?” Alexander finally looked at her. “Your father's death wasn't an accident.” The words seemed to echo through the room. Emily could barely breathe. “What did you say?” Alexander stepped toward her. “Emily—” “Don't.” She moved away. “You told me my father died in an accident.” “I told you what I was told.” “You knew?” “I knew there were questions.” “And you never told me?” “I was trying to protect you.” Emily laughed bitterly. “Everyone keeps saying that.” Victoria watched them silently. Emily turned toward her. “You came here knowing something about my father. Tell me the truth.” Alexander's voice became firm. “Victoria.” “She deserves to know.” “No.” Victoria shook her head. “You can't protect her forever.” Emily stared at Alexander. “Let her speak.” Alexander looked at Emily for several seconds. Then he stepped aside. Victoria took a breath. “Your father discovered that someone inside his company was stealing money. He planned to expose the person responsible.” Emily swallowed. “Who?” Victoria looked at Alexander. “Someone connected to both families.” Emily felt another chill. “Who?” Victoria didn't answer immediately. Instead, she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope. She held Chapter 3: The Promise Emily stood alone in the quiet hallway, staring at the closed door. Alexander had left without saying another word. She should have been relieved. Instead, his silence frightened her. There was something he wasn't telling her. Something connected to the mysterious promise everyone seemed determined to keep hidden. Emily walked back into the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed. Her eyes fell on the small envelope she had found earlier. She slowly opened it. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Her hands trembled as she read the first line. “Emily, if you are reading this, then the promise has finally reached you.” She stopped breathing. What promise? She continued reading. “Your marriage to Alexander was never supposed to happen this way. But there are things you must understand before you decide whether to stay.” Emily's heart began beating faster. The letter contained no signature. Only one final sentence. “Ask Alexander about the night his father died.” Emily lowered the paper. She knew immediately that she had to ask him. But before she could leave the room, the door opened. Alexander stood there. His expression changed when he saw the letter in her hand. “Where did you get that?” Emily stood. “It was waiting for me.” He walked toward her. “Emily, give it to me.” “No.” He stopped. She had never spoken to him like that before. “I want answers,” she said. Alexander looked away. “You don't know what you're asking.” “Then tell me.” For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Finally, Alexander whispered, “My father didn't die the way everyone thinks he did.” Emily felt a chill run through her. “What happened?” Alexander looked directly into her eyes. “He was murdered.” Emily covered her mouth. “And the person responsible,” he continued, “was someone I trusted.” She stared at him. “Who?” Alexander stepped closer. “I don't know.” “Then why are you afraid?” His voice became softer. “Because I believe that person is still looking for what my father left behind.” Emily looked at the letter again. “What did he leave behind?” Alexander's eyes remained fixed on hers. “A promise.” And suddenly Emily understood. The marriage was not just about saving her family. It was connected to Alexander's past. And whatever his father had promised all those years ago could change both of their lives forever. Chapter 4: The Promise Emily stood by the window, staring at the city lights below. She had been married to Alexander Blackwood for only a short time, yet it already felt as though she had known him for years. There was something about him she couldn't understand. He was cold with everyone else. But whenever he looked at her, something changed in his eyes. Emily turned away from the window when she heard the bedroom door open. Alexander walked inside. “You're still awake,” he said. “I couldn't sleep.” He loosened his tie and studied her carefully. “Is something wrong?” Emily hesitated. “I was thinking about what you said when we got married.” “What did I say?” “That this marriage was only business.” Alexander became silent. Emily looked at him. “Is that still what you believe?” For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he walked toward her. “I believed it when we started.” “And now?” He stopped only a few steps away. “Now I'm not so sure.” Emily's heart skipped. Before she could answer, Alexander's phone rang. He looked at the screen and his expression immediately changed. “Who is it?” Emily asked. “Someone from my past.” He answered the call. “What do you want?” A woman's voice could be heard faintly on the other end. Alexander's face became pale. “I told you never to contact me again.” He ended the call. Emily watched him. “Who was she?” “Someone who doesn't matter anymore.” “But she clearly matters.” Alexander looked at her. “You don't know what you're getting yourself into.” “Then tell me.” He stepped closer. “I made a promise a long time ago.” “What promise?” His eyes softened. “That I would never allow the person I love to suffer because of me.” Emily stared at him. “You love me?” Alexander looked away. “I shouldn't have said that.” He walked toward the door. Emily followed him. “Alexander.” He stopped. She reached for his hand. He turned around. For the first time, there was no coldness in his expression. Only fear. “Whatever happened in your past,” Emily whispered, “you don't have to face it alone.” Alexander looked at her for a long moment. Then he pulled her gently into his arms. Emily rested her head against his chest. Neither of them noticed the shadow standing outside the bedroom door. Someone had been listening. And that person already knew the secret Alexander had spent years trying to hide. Chapter 9 — The Secret Behind the Door The shadow outside the bedroom door remained perfectly still. Inside, Emily had no idea that someone was watching them. Alexander slowly released her from his arms, but his eyes stayed on her face. “Emily,” he whispered. She looked up at him. “What?” “There’s something I need to tell you.” Her heart began to beat faster. “What is it?” Before Alexander could answer, a soft sound came from the hallway. His expression changed immediately. Emily noticed. “What happened?” “Stay here.” Alexander walked toward the bedroom door and opened it. The hallway was empty. He looked left, then right. Nothing. But on the floor, just outside the door, was a small white envelope. Alexander picked it up. His face went pale. Emily stepped closer. “Alexander?” He quickly hid the envelope behind his back. “It's nothing.” She frowned. “That doesn't look like nothing.” He stared at her for several seconds. Then he opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. Alexander's fingers tightened around it. Emily saw the change in his face. “Who is that?” He didn't answer. She reached for the photograph, but Alexander pulled it away. “Emily, please.” “Why are you hiding it from me?” “Because I was trying to protect you.” “Protect me from what?” Alexander looked toward the hallway. “From the past.” Emily's voice softened. “What happened?” He finally handed her the photograph. Emily stared at it. It showed a younger Alexander standing beside a woman she had never seen before. But there was something else. A little girl stood between them. Emily looked back at Alexander. “Who is the child?” Alexander closed his eyes. “My daughter.” Emily froze. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. “Your daughter?” Emily whispered. “Yes.” “You have a child?” “I did.” Emily's eyes filled with confusion. “What do you mean, you did?” Alexander looked away. “She died.” Emily's heart sank. “How?” Alexander swallowed hard. “That is the secret I've been trying to bury for years.” Suddenly, another sound came from downstairs. A door slammed. Alexander immediately took Emily's hand. “We need to leave this room.” “Why?” “Because whoever left that photograph knows about her.” Emily stared at him. “Who?” Alexander's expression hardened. “The person who caused her death.” A cold silence filled the room. Then Emily heard footsteps approaching from downstairs. Slow. Heavy. Getting closer. Alexander pulled her behind him. The footsteps stopped. Someone was standing at the bottom of the stairs. Then a man's voice echoed through the house. “Alexander.” Emily gripped his arm. Alexander didn't move. The voice came again.Chapter 10 — The Man in the Hallway The bedroom door opened slowly. Emily held her breath. A man stepped into the room. He was tall, dressed in a dark coat, with sharp eyes that immediately settled on Alexander. For a moment, the two brothers simply stared at each other. “You,” Alexander said coldly. The man smiled. “Yes, brother. It's been a long time.” Emily looked between them. Alexander stepped in front of her. “You shouldn't be here.” “I could say the same about you,” the man replied. “What do you want?” The man's smile disappeared. “I want what belongs to me.” Alexander's jaw tightened. “You lost that right years ago.” The man looked past him at Emily. “So this is her.” Emily felt a chill run through her. “Who are you?” she asked. The man took one step forward. “My name is Daniel.” Alexander immediately said, “Don't talk to her.” Daniel laughed softly. “You're still protecting everyone from the truth.” “What truth?” Emily asked. Alexander turned toward her. “Emily, don't listen to him.” Daniel reached inside his coat and pulled out another photograph. He held it up. Emily stared at it. It was the same little girl from the first photograph. But this time, Alexander wasn't standing beside her. Daniel was. Emily looked at Alexander in confusion. “Why would your brother have a photograph of your daughter?” Alexander said nothing. Daniel smiled. “Because I was there the night she died.” Emily's heart dropped. Alexander stepped toward him. “Enough.” Daniel didn't move. “You've blamed yourself for years, Alexander.” Alexander's fists clenched. “But you never knew the whole story.” Emily looked at Alexander. “What is he talking about?” Daniel's eyes remained fixed on his brother. “Tell her.” Alexander's voice was barely a whisper. “Daniel was supposed to be watching her that night.” Emily covered her mouth. Daniel shook his head. “I wasn't the one who hurt her.” “Then who was?” Emily asked. Neither man answered. Then Daniel looked directly at Emily. “That's the question you should be asking.” Suddenly, Alexander's phone rang. He looked at the screen. His expression changed. “What is it?” Emily asked. Alexander answered. A woman's frightened voice came through the phone. “Alexander... you need to come downstairs.” “Why?” “I found something.” “What?” There was a long silence. Then she whispered, “Your daughter's diary.” The call ended. Alexander stared at the phone. Emily took his hand. “Let's go.” Daniel stepped aside. For the first time that night, his expression showed fear. Because whatever was written in that diary could finally reveal who had been lying all these years.Chapter 11 — The Diary Alexander and Emily hurried downstairs. Daniel followed behind them, unusually quiet. In the living room, a woman stood beside the fireplace holding a small, worn diary. Alexander stopped when he saw it. “Where did you find that?” She pointed toward an old wooden cabinet. “It was hidden behind this.” Alexander slowly walked over and took the diary from her hands. His fingers trembled. Emily moved closer. “Is that really hers?” Alexander nodded. “It belonged to my daughter.” He opened the diary. Most of the pages were filled with drawings, little notes, and memories from a child's life. Then he reached the final page. His face went completely pale. Emily looked over his shoulder. There were only three sentences written on the page. “I saw Uncle Daniel arguing with Daddy.” “Daddy told me to stay away from him.” “But Uncle Daniel said he would make Daddy pay.” Emily looked at Daniel. Daniel's face had lost all its color. “That isn't the whole story,” he said. Alexander turned toward him. “Then tell us the whole story.” Daniel stared at the diary. “I never hurt her.” “Then why did she write this?” “Because she was afraid.” “Afraid of you?” Daniel shook his head. “No.” He looked at Emily. “She was afraid of someone else.” The room became silent. “Who?” Emily asked. Daniel took a deep breath. “Your father.” Emily froze. “My father?” Alexander looked at Daniel in disbelief. “My father was dead long before you came back.” Daniel shook his head. “That's what everyone believed.” Emily's heart began pounding. “What are you saying?” Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a second photograph. He placed it on the table. Emily stared at it. The man in the photograph looked exactly like the man she remembered from an old family picture. Her father. But beneath the photograph was a handwritten date. A date from only three years ago. Emily stepped back. “That can't be possible.” Alexander looked at her. “Emily…” She shook her head. “No. My father died years ago.” Daniel's voice was quiet. “Then someone has been pretending to be dead.” A sudden noise came from outside. Everyone turned toward the window. A black car was parked in front of the house. Someone was sitting inside. Watching them. Alexander immediately pulled Emily closer. Daniel stared at the car. “I think he knows we found the diary.” Emily looked at Alexander. “Who?” Alexander's eyes remained fixed on the car. “The man who knows everything about our past.” The car suddenly started.Chapter 12 — The Unexpected Visitor The house fell silent after the black car disappeared. Emily couldn't take her eyes off the road outside. “My father is alive,” she whispered. Alexander moved closer to her. “We don't know that for certain.” “But that photograph…” “I know.” Emily turned toward him. “Why would someone fake his death?” Alexander looked at Daniel. “That is what we need to find out.” Daniel walked toward the window and pulled the curtains closed. “You shouldn't stay here tonight.” Alexander frowned. “Why?” “Because if someone was watching this house, they'll come back.” Emily hugged the diary against her chest. “What are we supposed to do?” Daniel looked at her. “Find the person who sent that photograph.” Before anyone could answer, there was a knock at the front door. Everyone froze. Three slow knocks. Emily looked at Alexander. “Are you expecting someone?” “No.” Daniel quietly reached for the door handle. Alexander stopped him. “I'll do it.” He walked toward the entrance. Emily followed closely behind him. Alexander opened the door. There was nobody outside. Only a small package sitting on the doorstep. Alexander picked it up and brought it inside. Emily stared at it. “What is that?” “I don't know.” There was no name on the package. No address. Nothing. Alexander carefully opened it. Inside was a silver necklace. Emily gasped. She knew it immediately. It had belonged to Alexander's daughter. “I've seen that before,” she whispered. Alexander stared at the necklace in disbelief. “It was buried with her.” Daniel stepped closer. “Then someone has been inside the grave.” Emily looked at him. “Why would anyone do that?” Daniel didn't answer. Alexander turned the necklace over. There was a tiny piece of paper attached to it. He unfolded it. Only five words were written there. SHE DIDN'T DIE THAT NIGHT. Emily's heart stopped. Alexander looked at Daniel. Daniel's face had gone pale. “What does that mean?” Emily asked. Daniel whispered, “It means we were lied to.” Emily looked at Alexander. “Your daughter might still be alive.” Alexander couldn't speak. For years, he had believed he had lost his child forever. Now, for the first time, a tiny spark of hope appeared in his eyes. Then Emily noticed something else. The necklace had a tiny red mark on the back. A symbol. She had seen that symbol before. On her father's old belongings. Emily slowly looked up. “I know who sent this.” Alexander stared at her. “Who?” Emily's voice trembled. “My father.”Chapter 13 — The Truth About Her Father Emily stood frozen in the middle of the room. “My father.” The words barely left her lips. Alexander took the note from her hand and read it again. “You're certain?” Emily nodded. “That symbol was on a watch he always wore. I remember seeing it when I was a child.” Daniel looked at her carefully. “Then your father may know where the girl is.” Alexander's eyes hardened. “We're going to find him.” Emily grabbed his arm. “But if he's alive, why did he let me believe he was dead?” “Maybe he wanted you to believe it,” Daniel said. Emily looked at him. “Why?” Daniel hesitated. “Because he was protecting something.” “What?” Daniel looked at Alexander. “Your marriage.” Emily's heart skipped. “What does my marriage have to do with my father?” Alexander stepped closer. “Emily, before we got married, your father knew who I was.” She stared at him. “How?” “He contacted me.” “When?” “Three months before I met you.” Emily pulled away. “You knew my father before we met?” Alexander nodded. “He told me never to get close to you.” Emily's eyes filled with tears. “Then why did you marry me?” Alexander reached for her hand. “Because I fell in love with you.” Emily stared at him. For the first time, the cold billionaire she had married looked completely vulnerable. “I tried to stay away,” he continued. “But I couldn't.” Daniel suddenly spoke. “Then your father knows you didn't listen.” Alexander looked at him. “What are you saying?” Daniel pointed toward the diary. “The girl didn't just write about me. Look at the last page again.” Emily opened the diary. There, beneath the words they had already read, was a tiny sentence written in faded ink. Emily read it aloud. “Daddy said Emily would one day marry Alexander.” Silence filled the room. Emily slowly looked at Alexander. “My father knew about us before we even met.” Alexander nodded. “And now I think I understand why.” A phone began ringing. Everyone turned. It wasn't Alexander's phone. It was coming from inside the old cabinet. Emily opened the drawer. Inside was an old phone. The screen showed one word: DAD. Emily stared at it, unable to breathe. Then the phone stopped ringing. A message appeared. “Emily, if you want to know the truth, come alone.” She looked at Alexander. He already knew what she was going to say. “I have to go.” “No,” Alexander said immediately. Emily held his gaze. “This is my father.” Alexander shook his head. “Then I'm coming with you.” Emily smiled sadly. “Maybe this time, we face the secret together.” Outside, somewhere in the darkness, a car engine started. Chapter 14 — The Promise Emily stared at Alexander. “What promise did my father make you?” Alexander hesitated. “He made me promise that I would protect you.” “From what?” “From the truth.” Emily's heart sank. “You knew something about my father all this time?” “I knew he was hiding something. I didn't know where he was or why he disappeared.” Before Emily could respond, Alexander's phone rang. There was no number. A message appeared. “Midnight. The old train station. Come alone.” Emily looked at him. “You're not going without me.” Alexander shook his head. “It could be dangerous.” “So could letting you go alone.” He looked into her eyes and finally nodded. At midnight, they arrived at the station. A figure stepped from the darkness. Emily stopped. She knew that face. “Dad?” The man looked at her with tears in his eyes. “Emily…” Alexander stepped forward. “Why did you let her believe you were dead?” Her father looked at him. “Because I was protecting her.” “From who?” Emily asked. Her father looked around nervously. “The person who destroyed both our families.” Suddenly, a noise came from behind them. Her father grabbed Emily's hand. “We have to go. He's found us.” Chapter 14 — The Truth Emily looked at her father. “You're alive.” He nodded. “I'm here to protect you.” Alexander took Emily’s hand. The truth had finally arrived. The truth was finally coming, and Emily was ready. The truth begins
