Chapter 3: The Mysterious Old Man

850 Words
In the days following the incident at the ruins, Emily had been investigating around the town, hoping to find more clues about the werewolf legend and the missing stone tablet. However, the townspeople were tight-lipped about the subject, always giving vague answers or quickly changing the topic whenever she tried to inquire. One evening, Emily was in the town library, poring over some ancient manuscripts. Suddenly, a bone-chilling cold swept over her, making her shiver involuntarily. Looking up, she saw the sky outside had taken on an unnatural dark green hue. "The aurora is coming," an old voice behind her said, startling Emily. She turned to see an elderly man with white hair, gazing at her with cloudy eyes. The man's face was covered in deep wrinkles, as if etched by the passage of time. "Hello," Emily said politely, "I'm Emily Nord, here for archaeological research." The old man nodded, "I know you, young one. I'm Odin Gunnersen, the caretaker of this library." His gaze fell on the manuscript Emily was reading, "It seems you're very interested in our town's history." Emily hesitated for a moment, then decided to ask directly, "Mr. Gunnersen, can you tell me more about the werewolf legend?" A flash of wariness crossed Odin's eyes, but it quickly disappeared. "Follow me," he said, turning towards a small room in the back of the library. Emily followed him into the room, which was filled with ancient books and manuscripts. Odin retrieved a worn leather-bound book from a locked cabinet. "This is a diary left by my ancestors," Odin explained, "It contains many of the town's secrets." He opened the book and pointed to a passage, "Look, this mentions the origin of the werewolves." Emily leaned in to look. The text read: "In the year 986 AD, a group of Viking warriors encountered a terrible blizzard while exploring Greenland. They lost their way and stumbled into a mysterious valley bathed in aurora light. There, they met a mysterious figure who claimed to be Odin. This 'god' granted them the ability to transform into wolves under the aurora, as the price for their survival..." "This is incredible," Emily marveled, "Do you believe this legend?" Odin gave her a meaningful look, "In this town, child, many incredible things are true." Just then, a wolf's howl echoed from afar, sounding particularly mournful. Emily couldn't help but shudder. "Time is running out," Odin suddenly became tense, "Listen, young one, you must find that stone tablet. It not only controls the transformation but can also break the curse." "Curse?" Emily asked, puzzled. Odin sighed, "Yes. The werewolf ability is a double-edged sword. With each transformation, they lose a part of their humanity. Eventually, they will become complete beasts, unable to return to human form." Emily gasped, "So that's why someone stole the tablet?" Odin nodded, "Exactly. Some want to keep the werewolf power forever, while others hope to completely rid themselves of this curse." Suddenly, the library lights began to flicker, and the wind outside grew stronger. "The aurora is coming," Odin warned, "You must return to your hotel immediately. Remember, trust no one, not even those you think you know. Under the aurora, anyone could be a werewolf." Emily hurriedly thanked Odin and rushed out of the library. Outside, the sky was already covered with brilliant aurora lights, beautiful yet eerie. She walked quickly along the deserted street, her heart racing. Every shadow seemed to hide danger, every sound made her nerves tense. Just as she was about to reach the hotel, a familiar figure appeared at the street corner. It was Sylvia. "Emily!" Sylvia called out, "I'm so glad I found you. We've discovered new clues!" Emily hesitated. Odin's warning echoed in her ears: trust no one. But Sylvia looked so sincere, and she had been helping with the investigation all along. While Emily was hesitating, Sylvia had already walked up to her. "Come on," Sylvia said, extending her hand, "I'll show you what we've found." Emily took a deep breath and made her decision. She reached out, about to take Sylvia's hand when she suddenly noticed the strange glint in the other woman's eyes under the aurora light. At that crucial moment, a figure suddenly rushed out from a nearby alley, yanking Emily away. "Run!" It was Odin's voice. Emily realized in horror that Sylvia's hand had begun to grow claws, her face twisting and transforming. Odin pulled Emily, running towards the hotel as fast as they could, with Sylvia's angry roars echoing behind them. They burst into the hotel, and Odin quickly shut the door, bolting it. "Thank you for saving me," Emily said, catching her breath. Odin shook his head, "Now is not the time for thanks. Listen, you must leave this town as soon as possible. But before that, we need to find that stone tablet." Emily nodded, realizing she was now deeply entangled in the town's secrets. She knew that the coming days would be a dangerous adventure, racing against time. And this seemingly quiet town was hiding secrets far more terrifying than she had imagined.
