Emily, Odin, and Sylvia held their breath, listening to the approaching footsteps outside. The air in the hunter's cabin seemed to freeze, tension enveloping them like a tangible presence.
Suddenly, Odin stood up, his eyes flickering with a strange light. "Follow me," he whispered, gesturing for Emily and Sylvia to come along. He led them to the back of the cabin, where there was a cellar entrance almost hidden by overgrown weeds.
"Get in, quickly," Odin urged, carefully lifting the cover. Emily and Sylvia didn't hesitate, quickly slipping inside. Odin followed, gently closing the lid behind them.
They had barely hidden when they heard the cabin door being kicked open violently. Heavy footsteps sounded overhead, accompanied by low growls and sniffing sounds.
"They were here," a gruff voice said, "I can smell them."
Emily felt her heart pounding in her chest, and she gripped Odin's arm tightly. Odin patted her hand gently, signaling her to stay calm.
"Keep searching," another voice commanded, "They couldn't have gone far."
Footsteps moved back and forth inside the cabin as the searchers overturned furniture and smashed windows. Emily held her breath, afraid to make even the slightest sound.
Suddenly, the footsteps stopped right above the cellar entrance. Emily felt a chill run through her, knowing they were about to be discovered.
At this critical moment, a wolf's howl echoed from the distance. The searchers immediately halted their actions.
"It's the captain's signal," one of them said, "They might have found something in another direction."
"Damn it," another cursed, "Let's go, don't let them take all the credit."
The footsteps gradually faded away, and the cabin fell silent once again. Emily, Odin, and Sylvia waited a few more minutes, ensuring the danger had truly passed before carefully climbing out of the cellar.
"That was too close," Emily sighed with relief.
Sylvia nodded, "Yeah, lucky for that wolf howl."
Odin's expression, however, remained unusually serious. "That wasn't a coincidence. Someone's helping us."
"What do you mean?" Emily asked.
Instead of answering directly, Odin said, "We can't stay here long. We must return to town before nightfall."
"Back to town? Are you crazy?" Sylvia exclaimed, "Hans's people are everywhere!"
"Exactly why it's the safest place," Odin explained, "They won't expect us to go back. Besides, I have a feeling someone's waiting for us there."
Emily and Sylvia exchanged a puzzled look but decided to trust Odin. They carefully left the cabin and headed towards the town.
As night fell, they finally reached the edge of town. The streets were deserted, with only streetlamps casting a dim yellow glow. They moved cautiously, hiding in the shadows.
"Where should we go?" Emily whispered.
Just then, a familiar voice came from nearby, "Psst, over here."
They turned to see Mayor Robert standing in the shadow of a building, waving at them. The three quickly ran over.
"Come in, quickly," Robert said, opening a hidden door. They followed Robert into a basement lit by a few candles, providing weak illumination.
"Thank God you're safe," Robert said, his face showing relief, "I've been waiting for you."
"Was it you who howled?" Odin asked.
Robert nodded, "Yes, I knew Hans's people were hunting you. I had to take the risk."
"How did you know we'd come back?" Emily asked curiously.
"I wasn't a hundred percent sure," Robert admitted, "But I know Odin. I guessed he'd realize the town might actually be the safest place."
Emily looked at Odin in surprise, "You know each other?"
Odin nodded, "Robert and I have... shared secrets."
Robert took a deep breath, "Now's not the time for explanations. We don't have much time; Hans is strengthening his power. Emily, I heard you found some clues in the ruins?"
Emily nodded and began to explain her discoveries in detail. When she mentioned the mysterious symbol, Robert's eyes lit up.
"I know that symbol," he said, "It represents the Moon God's altar. Legend has it, the Moon God's altar is the source of werewolf power. If Hans finds the altar..."
"He could gain unparalleled power," Odin continued, his face growing grave.
"But where is the altar?" Sylvia asked.
Robert walked to an old bookshelf and took out an ancient leather-bound book. "This book might have the answer. It records the town's history, including some little-known secrets."
Just as Robert opened the book, a commotion suddenly erupted upstairs. Heavy footsteps and low growls gradually approached.
"Damn, they've found us," Robert cursed, "You must leave immediately. Take this book, find the altar, stop Hans."
"What about you?" Emily asked, her voice full of concern.
Robert gave a bitter smile, "Don't worry about me. As the mayor, I have ways to deal with them. Now go!"
Odin grabbed Emily's hand, with Sylvia close behind. They escaped through a hidden underground passage, the sounds of fighting echoing behind them.
When they finally reached the outskirts of town, Emily looked back at the brightly lit town. She knew a greater storm was coming, and the ancient book in their hands might be the key to turning the tide.
