Chapter 15: Beneath the Veil

1130 Words
Celeste and Ethan stood frozen as Sienna studied them, her gaze sharp and knowing. The dim candlelight flickered against the stone walls, casting shifting shadows across the ancient maps and documents that cluttered the chamber. “You’ve come far,” Sienna finally said, her voice calm but edged with urgency. “But you don’t have much time.” Ethan stepped forward, still gripping the dagger. “Who are you? How do you know about us?” Sienna gave a small, almost sad smile. “Because, like you, I’ve lived this before.” Celeste’s breath hitched. “You remember your past lives?” Sienna nodded. “Not all of them, but enough to understand the truth. Enough to know what’s coming for you.” She gestured to a wooden table, where a large, yellowed parchment lay spread open. “And enough to know why the Veil is so desperate to stop you.” Ethan and Celeste stepped closer, their eyes scanning the parchment. It was a map—one that stretched across centuries, marking locations with symbols they couldn’t decipher. Some names were faded, others scratched out entirely. “This,” Sienna said, “is a record of all the souls who have been trapped in the cycle.” Celeste’s fingers trembled as she traced one of the names. “These people… are they like us?” Sienna hesitated before answering. “They were. But not all of them made it.” A heavy silence settled between them. Celeste could feel the weight of those lost lives pressing down on her, as if their echoes still lingered in the air. “And if we don’t break the cycle?” she asked softly. Sienna met her gaze. “Then you’ll be erased. Like the others.” Ethan’s grip on the dagger tightened. “Then tell us how to stop them.” Sienna exhaled, pulling out another piece of parchment—a page torn from an ancient text. The writing was in a language neither of them recognized, but the image at the center made Celeste’s pulse quicken. It was the symbol from the ledger. The same insignia that had been stamped onto the envelope they had received. “This is their mark,” Sienna said. “The emblem of the Veil. It represents their control over the cycle. If you want to break free, you have to destroy what binds you to them.” Celeste frowned. “And what binds us?” Sienna looked at them both. “Your past.” A chill ran through Celeste. “You mean our memories?” Sienna shook her head. “Not just your memories. Your entire existence within this cycle. The reason you keep finding each other, the reason you keep losing each other—it’s because your souls are tethered to something ancient. Something the Veil controls.” Ethan exchanged a look with Celeste. “Then how do we sever that connection?” Sienna hesitated before speaking. “You have to return to where it all began.” Celeste’s stomach twisted. “The place where we first met?” “No,” Sienna said. “The place where you first died.” The words sent a shiver down Celeste’s spine. Images of her past visions—flashes of fire, of drowning, of bloodstained hands—flooded her mind. “But… we don’t know where that is.” Sienna tapped the map. “Yes, you do. It’s written in the dreams you’ve had. In the places you’ve seen but don’t remember visiting.” She pointed to a faded marking near the edge of the parchment. “The oldest record of your past life is here.” Ethan leaned in, reading the name aloud. “Montreuil.” Celeste felt the name settle into her bones like a forgotten melody. “France.” Sienna nodded. “That’s where the Veil’s power over you is strongest. And that’s where you’ll find the key to breaking free.” A sudden pounding on the door sent Celeste’s heart racing. Sienna’s expression darkened. “They found you.” Ethan pulled Celeste behind him as Sienna grabbed a satchel from a nearby shelf, shoving several documents inside. “Take this,” she said, handing the bag to Celeste. “It holds everything you need. But you have to leave. Now.” The door rattled again, the force behind it growing stronger. Celeste could hear muffled voices on the other side—sharp commands, hurried movements. They were out of time. “This way,” Sienna urged, leading them toward another hidden passage. She pressed her palm against a section of the wall, and with a soft click, a panel slid open, revealing a dark, narrow tunnel. “Go. Don’t stop until you’re far from here.” Celeste hesitated. “What about you?” Sienna smiled sadly. “I’ll hold them off. But you need to make it to Montreuil.” Ethan grabbed Celeste’s hand and pulled her into the passage just as the door behind them burst open. Celeste caught a final glimpse of Sienna standing firm, her chin raised defiantly as dark figures flooded into the chamber. Then the wall slid shut, plunging them into darkness. They ran. Their footsteps echoed against the damp walls as they followed the twisting tunnel, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. Celeste clutched the satchel tightly against her chest, her mind spinning. Montreuil. France. The place where they had first died. They had been searching for answers. Now they had a destination. And the Veil would do everything in its power to stop them from reaching it. The tunnel stretched longer than they expected, the darkness pressing against them like a living thing. The walls felt closer the deeper they went, the air thick and heavy with damp earth. Celeste fought the urge to look over her shoulder, convinced that at any moment, the Veil’s enforcers would come tearing through the passage after them. Ethan squeezed her hand. “Keep moving.” Celeste nodded, forcing herself forward. After what felt like an eternity, a sliver of moonlight appeared ahead. The tunnel ended at a rusted metal grate, barely hanging on its hinges. Ethan pushed against it, the old metal groaning as it gave way. They stepped out into the cold night air, surrounded by thick trees and an open road just beyond them. Celeste took a shaky breath. “Where do we go from here?” Ethan pulled out the documents Sienna had given them. He flipped through them until he found what he was looking for—a single train ticket. He handed it to Celeste. “We go to Montreuil.” A chill passed through her as she took the ticket from his hand. Their journey wasn’t over. It was only just beginning.
