Sofia didn’t suspect a thing. Her roommates had been annoyingly persuasive, insisting she join them for “a little dinner outside the city.” Pia dangled the promise of good food, Marco swore the view was unbeatable, and Lani, the most dramatic of them all, declared, “It’ll heal your soul, Sofie. Trust me.” They hovered around her while she got ready, trading glances that should have tipped her off, fussing over her outfit with a suspicious level of enthusiasm. She blamed the exhaustion from the week, the deadlines, the back-to-back tasks, the mental fog she had been wading through. She should have known then.
