CHAPTER THIRTEEN I heard a small groan and realized it came from me. Her words tore at my heart like a feline’s talons, and pain pressed into my chest. Before I could stop myself, I pulled her out of the chair and wrapped my arms around her body, ignoring her surprised look. It wasn’t because I wanted to, but because she needed to be held, and I felt compelled to oblige. With her cheek resting on my chest, I buried mine in the top of her head and breathed in not only the vanilla aroma of her shampoo, but also the age-old fragrance of her life-force, as familiar to me as my own. “It’s okay.” I whispered the words into her hair, willing myself to absorb her pain. With my protective instincts thrown into over-drive, memories of all the past lives we had spent together came rushing back. I
