Harper walked into Kingston Realty the next morning with a knot in her stomach.
She hadn't slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Cole's face. His lips on hers. His whisper against her skin.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
She'd spent the night replaying their dinner. The candlelight. The wine. His hand on hers. The way he looked at her like she was the only woman in the world.
She sat down at her desk, coffee in hand, trying to focus. The Hudson Yards proposal was due Friday. She had zoning analysis to finalize. Reports to submit.
Instead, she stared at her computer screen and thought about him.
"Harper."
She looked up. Mia — her friend from the bar that first night — was standing at her cubicle, eyes wide with excitement.
"Did you hear?" Mia whispered.
"Hear what?"
"About Cole Kingston. The CEO."
Harper's heart stopped. "What about him?"
Mia leaned in, her voice dropping. "He's engaged. Apparently, it's been arranged for years. Some old money family. His fiancée is visiting today. She's supposed to be gorgeous."
Harper's blood ran cold.
Engaged.
He's engaged.
She thought about the way he'd kissed her. The way he'd held her. The way he'd whispered that he couldn't stay away.
He has a fiancée.
"Are you okay?" Mia asked, frowning. "You look pale."
"I'm fine," Harper managed. "Just tired."
Mia studied her for a moment, then shrugged. "Anyway, everyone's talking about it. She's supposed to arrive this morning. I'll let you know if I see her."
She walked away.
Harper sat frozen at her desk.
Cole Kingston is engaged.
He has a fiancée.
And he still kissed me. Touched me. Told me he can't stay away.
Her phone buzzed.
The Benefactor: I heard you had a lovely dinner last night. Keep up the good work. Six days left.
Harper stared at the message.
The Benefactor was watching her. Always watching.
And now Cole was engaged to someone else.
She didn't know what to feel anymore.
---
The office buzzed with gossip all morning.
Harper tried to focus on her work. She attended meetings. She answered emails. She smiled when people spoke to her.
But inside, she was falling apart.
He's engaged. He's engaged. He's engaged.
Why hadn't he told her?
Why had he kissed her like she was the only woman in the world?
Why had he made her believe—
"Harper."
She looked up.
The entire office had gone quiet.
Standing at the entrance of the executive wing was a woman.
She was stunning — tall, blonde, elegant. Her dress was designer. Her heels were sky-high. Her smile was polished and graceful.
Vanessa Sterling.
Harper had never seen her before. She knew nothing about her. All she knew was what Mia had just told her: this was Cole's fiancée.
"Everyone," Daniel Vance announced, stepping forward. "I'd like to introduce Miss Vanessa Sterling. She's Mr. Kingston's fiancée. She'll be visiting the office today."
Vanessa smiled — gracious, warm, practiced.
"Thank you, Daniel. I'm so excited to see where Cole spends his days." She looked around the office, her eyes scanning every face. "I've heard so much about all of you."
Her eyes landed on Harper.
And lingered.
Harper's heart pounded.
Vanessa's smile widened.
"You must be Harper James," she said, walking toward her. "I've heard wonderful things about your work."
Harper forced a smile. "Thank you, Miss Sterling."
"Please, call me Vanessa." She extended her hand. Harper shook it. Vanessa's grip was warm, friendly. "I do hope we'll get to know each other better."
"I'd love that," Harper said, her voice steady despite her racing heart.
Vanessa released her hand. "I'm sure we will. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to see my fiancé."
She walked toward the executive wing, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
The office erupted in whispers.
Harper sat frozen at her desk, her mind spinning.
She's beautiful. She's elegant. She's everything a billionaire's fiancée should be.
And Cole kissed me anyway.
---
Harper couldn't breathe.
She needed air. She needed to get away from all of this — the gossip, the whispers, the woman who was engaged to the man she was falling for.
She slipped out of the office and headed for the stairwell.
She didn't make it.
A hand caught her arm and pulled her into an empty conference room.
The door clicked shut.
Harper spun around.
Cole.
His jaw was tight. His eyes were blazing.
"Harper—"
"Save it," she said, her voice shaking. "You're engaged."
"I know."
"You're engaged," she repeated, her voice cracking. "And you kissed me. You held me. You told me you couldn't stay away from me."
"I meant it." He stepped closer, his hands finding her waist. "Every word."
"Then why—"
"It's not real." His voice was raw. Urgent. "It's a contract. My family forced it. Business merger, old money, alliances. I never wanted it. I never wanted her."
Harper stared at him. "What?"
"Vanessa and I have history. But it's not what you think. This engagement — it's a business deal. I can't get out of it without destroying everything my grandfather built."
Harper's heart pounded. "So you're trapped."
"Trapped." He laughed bitterly. "That's one word for it."
He stepped closer, his forehead resting against hers.
"I know I should have told you," he whispered. "I was going to. But I didn't want to lose you before I even had a chance."
"Cole..."
"I'm not your enemy, Harper. I never was." He cupped her face in his hands. "And whatever you think you know about me — about this — it's not the whole truth."
She wanted to believe him.
She wanted to trust him.
But he was engaged to another woman.
And she was falling for him anyway.
---
Footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Cole pulled back, his expression shifting instantly — from vulnerable to controlled.
The door opened.
Vanessa stood there, her warm smile firmly in place.
"There you are," she said sweetly. "I was looking for you, darling."
She stepped into the room, her eyes darting between Harper and Cole. She saw the way they were standing. The way his hands were still on Harper's waist.
"Am I interrupting something?" Vanessa asked, her voice light.
"Nothing important," Cole said flatly. "Harper and I were just discussing the Hudson Yards proposal."
"Oh, of course." Vanessa's smile never wavered. "I'm sure Harper is very dedicated to her work."
Harper forced herself to smile. "I'm always dedicated to my work, Miss Sterling."
"I'm sure you are." Vanessa walked toward Cole and linked her arm through his. "Well, darling, I was thinking we could have lunch together. I've missed you."
Cole's jaw tightened. "I have meetings—"
"Cancel them."
"I can't."
Vanessa's smile softened. "Cole. Please."
The silence stretched between them.
Cole looked at Harper. His eyes apologized.
Then he nodded. "Fine."
Vanessa beamed. "Wonderful."
She led him out of the room, but paused at the door.
"Oh, Harper?" She looked back, her smile gracious. "I do hope we'll see more of you. You seem lovely."
Then she was gone.
Harper stood alone in the conference room, her heart pounding, her mind spinning.
She's beautiful. She's kind. She's everything Cole should want.
And he kissed me anyway.
She didn't understand.
She didn't understand any of it.
Harper went back to her desk in a daze.
She couldn't focus. Couldn't think. All she could see was Vanessa's warm smile. All she could hear was Cole's confession.
"It's not real."
"My family forced it."
"I can't get out of it without destroying everything."
He was trapped. Just like her.
But why?
Why was he protecting her?
Why had he kissed her when he was engaged?
Why did he look at her like she was the only woman in the world?
Her phone buzzed.
The Benefactor: I saw you with Cole. Remember who's in control. Six days.
Harper stared at the message.
The Benefactor was watching her. Always watching.
But Cole was watching too.
And Harper didn't know what to do anymore.
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number: Meet me at the rooftop bar. 8 PM. Come alone.
She stared at the message.
No name. No context.
But she knew exactly who it was.
Cole.
He'd found a way to see her. Even with Vanessa here.
She typed:
Harper: I'll be there.
