Silvia.
When noon arrived I was ready. I had spent a lot of time thinking about what I was going to say at the meeting. I wanted to make sure I said everything right. The elders are not people, most of them. They are just careful which is different. I can work with that if I give them something to focus on besides me.
As I walked to the council chamber I heard people yelling.
* "There is nothing to talk about."
* "He should be killed. It is obvious."
* "Bringing this up all is insulting."
I stopped outside the door. Took a deep breath. Then I went in.
The room got quiet.
Six elders were sitting at a table all looking at me. Antonio looked worried, but also steady. Elder Elizabeth was paying attention. The others had faces, which meant they were trying not to show how they felt.
I walked to the head of the table. Sat down. I let the silence last a little longer than usual.
Toby stood behind me very quiet.
"My parents, the Alpha and Luna thought humans could be studied and understood " I said, trying to sound calm. "They believed that if humans were not so scared of us things would be better. We can teach them about us. They will not be so afraid."
Elder Dean spoke up his voice sharp. "Where did that get your parents? They are dead shot by humans in the woods."
I looked at him slowly. "I respect you, Elder Dean. Please do not interrupt me."
I kept looking at him until he looked away. Then I kept talking.
"I want to keep doing what my parents started. I am going to the world. I will go with the human we have here. Toby and Ava will come with me. We need to learn more about humans so we can have a future."
The room erupted.
* "This has never been done before."
* "You will get killed before you have been Alpha for a week."
* "You are not safe without a lot of guards."
Elder Varish said, "That human will kill you soon as he can. That is what humans do."
I let them finish talking. Then I said, calmly "That human is my mate."
The room got quiet again. It was a different kind of quiet.
I saw the elders looking at me surprised and unsure. Elder Elizabeth looked relieved. Antonio closed his eyes for a moment. The others were shocked and did not believe me. Elder Dean looked complicated like he wanted to say something. Knew he should not.
Elder Colin just looked at me thinking.
I remembered that. Kept my face still.
"If you do not like my decision " I said, "then respect the Moon Goddess. She chose him, not me." I stopped for a moment. "I am not going alone. Toby and Ava are coming with me. If the human does anything Toby will take care of it."
Toby stood up a little straighter behind me.
"I am going to get the human " I said, standing up. "He will promise not to hurt me. If you are satisfied we will leave in the morning." I looked around the table and at Elder Colin. "If you are not satisfied we will talk more about what it means to question me and the Moon Goddess."
I left the room.
Toby was beside me walking with me.
"Are you sure?" he asked, not challenging me just asking.
"Ask Sienna " I said. "She knows what is going on not me."
He accepted that.
ASHER'S POV.
I thought I would be dead by morning.
The guards outside my cell made it sound like that was what would happen.. Morning came and I was still alive.
The guards. Someone gave me food. Hard bread and some kind of stew. I ate it because being alive and hungry is better than being dead.
Then I waited.
Waiting is the part. Not because I was scared. Because I had nothing to do. My mind kept thinking about the things.
I thought about the woman with hair and green eyes that turned gold. I thought about how she looked at me like she really saw me.
I was still thinking about that when the dungeon gates opened.
The guards stood up straight which meant someone important was there.
"I want to see the human " a voice said. It was soft and certain.
I sat up.
Footsteps. Then she was standing outside my cell looking at me. She had changed clothes. Pulled her hair back and she looked even more in charge than before.
"What is your name, human?" she asked.
I smiled. She was direct, no nonsense.
"So you are the Queen " I said.
The big guard behind her spoke up "She asked you a question."
"The name is Asher " I said, looking at her. "Asher Cain. Your Majesty."
She looked at me like she was thinking. Not quite a smile,. Like she was filing something away.
"Good " she said. "Bring him out."
They put chains on my wrists, which I thought was unnecessary and led me out of the dungeon. We walked through corridors that were much nicer than my cell and, into a room where six older people were sitting. They looked at me with hostility, caution and one man just looked at me like he was thinking.
I noted him. Said nothing.
The Queen sat down. Looked at me. "Asher I am going to the world. I need you to promise that you will not hurt me. If you do Toby Aetos will take care of you."
I looked at Toby, who looked like he would enjoy that task.
"Well " I said, "I like my head where it's. I promise I will not hurt you."
"Then swear it " one of the elders said.
I looked around the room. Saw all the hostile faces, the chains on my wrists and the Queen watching me with a steady gaze that I could not read. And I found that I really meant what I was saying.
"I, Asher Cain promise to the council that I will take the Queen to the world and make sure she is safe. If anything bad happens to her Toby Aetos can have my head."
There was silence.
" well " the Queen said, standing up. "Take him to the guest rooms. We will leave in the morning."
The Queen walked away without looking at me.
The guards took me to the door. The guest rooms were going to be a lot better than the floor I was on before.
As I was leaving the room I looked back. Saw the old man at the end of the table. He was the one who was watching me in a way not with feelings. He did not. Look away. His eyes followed me out of the room with an patient look like he had already made up his mind and was just waiting for the right time to do something.
I did not know the mans name. I did not know what he had decided to do.
I learned a long time ago to watch the people who are not reacting the ones who are thinking ahead.
Something told me that I would see the man again that this was not the last time.
The Queen and her people like the man were still, on my mind.
