Chapter 3

326 Words
He closed his hand around mine, his palm burning hot. "Claire, don't worry. I'm fine." I could hear the frantic pounding of his heart. As Adrian and I grew closer, Chloe finally lost patience waiting for him. Through a friend back home, she made sure he learned where she was. She expected him to be overjoyed, cancel all his work, and fly to her instantly. Unfortunately for her, Adrian only stared at the address for a long time. In the end, he didn't go. Chloe was furious. Around the same time, our parents told her that I had married Adrian on the day she fled the wedding. She believed Adrian loved her so much that he had endured 99 of her tests. If he hadn't come for her this time, she decided, the Hale elders must have interfered. Spoiled all her life and unable to tolerate the slightest frustration, she immediately called the Hale residence to demand answers. Her words were vicious. "You controlling bastards! Are your own lives so miserable that you have to torment me? Let me tell you something—Adrian would rather die than marry anyone but me! "Go ahead. Try to make him register a marriage with Claire Bennett. He'll never agree!" Adrian's grandmother happened to answer the phone. The abuse sent her straight to the emergency room. She was nearly 90 years old and already in poor health. The shock left her in critical condition. Holding Adrian's hand, she told him that her only wish was to see him marry me and have a child with me. Adrian was the son of her beloved youngest child. He had been the apple of her eye since the day he was born. "Adrian, marry Claire. I have to see your child before I die." That night, Adrian smoked until well past midnight and made call after unanswered call. The next morning, he came to see me. "Claire, let's make our marriage official."
