"Anjola the rice is burning o!" I screamed from the comfort of my room as a sniffed a whiff of burnt rice, hoping my friend will hear.
"I'm already there. Don't worry!" She screamed back.
She has finally managed to burn our dinner...again.
I dropped the novel I was currently reading and made my way downstairs, the smell of burnt rice welcoming my nostrils, each step I took forward.
"Anjola you've burnt this one again abi?" I said once I was close enough for her to hear me.
"Sorry jhare. I was on a call with Justin" She chuckled while she scraped the little portion of rice that managed to survive the burnt offering into a cooler.
"The same Justin again?" I asked and propped myself on one of the kitchen counters.
" Yes na... Who else?" She replied
"Have you guys still not met? "
" Not yet" She said, facing me for a second as she said the last part.
"But we video call na"
"Hmm...Okay o"
"Anita? What is it again?" She said but facing me fully this time around
" I don't know o. I'm just thinking you should atleast meet this guy before you become this indebted. Or what do you think?"
" Girl...If this is about the other time...then no. Justin is not like that. Atleast we video call almost everyday and I know who I'm talking to" she replied, referring to the other time she fell 'in love' with an impersonator online.
She walked to the other side of the kitchen and opened the freezer to retrieve the stew we cooked the other night to warm up.
"Okay o. If you say so"
"So what's up?" Anjola asked me as she turned on the gas cooker for the stew to start boiling.
"I'm good" I said nonchalantly
" What about that guy I told you about. Has he called you?" She continued and I froze
" Umm...yeah he did" I said as I took my phone which was lying on the counter beside me and started checking my gallery to avoid looking at her.
"So...Have you guys met?" She pushed further
" Look Anjola... He's...He's not just my type okay?" I said, finally looking her in the eyes.
As expected, I got the usual ' so who is your type' and 'you need to find a man' speech from my best friend.
"I'm not just ready okay? I'll tell you when I am but I'm really not just ready to go into things like that right now" I replied
She paused for a while before continuing
" It's about what happened that night right?"
"Why won't you tell me?"
" See babe go and check the stew. Don't let it burn o" I replied, teasing her a little about her tendency to burn almost everything she cooked.
Thankfully she dropped the matter and went to check on the boiling stew but not before giving me a ' I'll make sure I get it out of you someday' look
She served the rice and stew and we eat in complete silence as both of us were preoccupied with our phones as we sat down on one of the couches in the living room to eat.
"Um...I'm going to take a coding class" I said, breaking the silence
Anita looked up and gave me a confused look before replying
"Why?"
"I don't know. I just wanted to learn since dad loved it so much and I'll think he'll like If I learn it"
" Ohh" she said, looking back down at her almost empty plate.
She probably didn't want to push it since she knew it was a touchy subject for me. We've always avoided the conversation since my father died four years ago in my last year of uni.
Ever since then, I'll always try to do different things that reminded me of him and that's what made me make up my mind to learn coding since my father was a programmer and he knew two programming languages.
Infact tried to teach me sometime when I was younger but I would always refuse.
Something I regret now...
"Umm... I'm going to bed now. Goodnight?" She stood up and took her now empty plate back to the kitchen, probably to wash it. After some minutes she came back out and made her way to her room.
I let out a sigh and rubbed my face, something that I did out of my reflex action anytime I was stressed.
I took my plate back to the kitchen and dropped it in the sink, making a mental note to wash it tommorow morning and also retreated to my room.
I started checking coding classes in my neighborhood with the help of Google. I found some but I needed the one which could fit into my busy schedule.
I went on with that for a while until I narrowed down to three choices. I decided I'll go check them out tomorrow to see which one I'll get registered into.
Right now, I needed some sleep which is exactly what I did as I fell into a slumber almost immediately.
It's going to be a long day tomorrow...
