Chapter Seven: The Woman Who Vanished

886 Words
The hidden passage swallowed every sound. Amelia froze on the stone staircase. Behind her, the bookshelf slid shut with a heavy rumble. Darkness. Complete darkness. Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it echoing through the narrow tunnel. She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone. Only eighteen percent battery remained. The flashlight flickered to life. Ancient stone walls stretched before her, covered with decades of dust and thin strands of cobwebs. The air smelled of damp earth and forgotten history. She looked behind her. Nothing. The staircase disappeared into darkness. Maybe… Maybe she had imagined someone following her. She took another careful step. Then another. The brass key felt unusually warm in her hand. Every instinct told her to turn back. Instead, she continued deeper underground. Hundreds of miles away, in Kingsley City, Nathaniel Kingsley stood in the empty master bedroom. The wardrobe doors remained open. Half the shelves were bare. Her favorite novels were gone. Her sketchbooks. Her coats. Even the lavender candle she always lit before bedtime had disappeared. The room looked larger now. Colder. Lifeless. He walked toward the bedside table. Only one thing remained. Their wedding photograph. He picked it up. Amelia was laughing in the picture, looking at him instead of the camera. He wasn’t looking at her. He had been answering a business call. He had never noticed. Until now. A knock interrupted his thoughts. “Come in.” His assistant, Daniel Brooks, entered carrying a tablet. “Good morning, sir.” Nathaniel placed the photograph back where he had found it. “What is it?” “I tried contacting Mrs. Kingsley.” Nathaniel looked up. “There was no answer.” “I wasn’t expecting one.” Daniel hesitated. “I also contacted the apartment you purchased for her last year.” Nathaniel frowned. “She never checked in.” “What?” “The concierge says no one has collected the keys.” Nathaniel’s expression hardened. “What about her friends?” “They haven’t heard from her.” A strange unease settled in his chest. For the first time since the divorce… He realized he had absolutely no idea where Amelia had gone. Back beneath Carter Manor… The staircase ended before a thick iron door. Amelia brushed away years of dust. A single keyhole sat at its center. Her fingers tightened around the old brass key. “This is it.” She inserted the key. It fit perfectly. The lock resisted at first. Then, Click. The sound echoed through the chamber. The heavy door slowly creaked open. A rush of stale air escaped from inside. Her flashlight illuminated a small underground study. It was untouched. Shelves lined the walls. Old maps. Leather journals. Family portraits wrapped carefully in cloth. A massive wooden desk stood in the center. It looked as though someone had simply walked away… And never returned. Amelia stepped inside. The air felt strangely still. Almost sacred. On the desk lay a single envelope. Her name was written across it. To Amelia. Her pulse quickened. She reached for it. Before her fingers touched the paper— Footsteps echoed from the staircase. Someone else had entered the passage. At Kingsley Holdings… Nathaniel stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office. His phone buzzed. The caller ID displayed a familiar name. Sophia Bennett. He answered immediately. “I’ve arrived.” Her voice was calm. “I’m downstairs.” “I’ll send someone.” “No.” She paused. “I think we should speak privately.” Ten minutes later, Sophia entered his office. She looked almost exactly as he remembered. Elegant. Confident. Yet there was a sadness in her eyes he had never seen before. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Finally, Nathaniel broke the silence. “I never thought I’d see you again.” Sophia smiled faintly. “Neither did I.” He stepped closer. “I ended my marriage.” Her smile disappeared. “You… what?” “I divorced Amelia.” Sophia stared at him in disbelief. “You divorced your wife…” “Because you’re back.” The silence that followed felt endless. When Sophia finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper. “Nathaniel…” She slowly shook her head. “I never asked you to do that.” His expression changed. “What do you mean?” “I came back because I need your help.” She reached into her handbag and placed a thick file on his desk. “I’ve been trying to expose someone.” Nathaniel frowned. “Who?” Sophia looked directly into his eyes. “The person who destroyed my life…” She took a shaky breath. “…is the same person who destroyed your marriage.” Meanwhile… Deep beneath Carter Manor… Amelia switched off her flashlight. The footsteps were closer now. Slow. Measured. Not trying to hide. She quickly slipped behind a tall bookshelf. The underground study fell silent. The footsteps stopped. A beam of light swept across the room. Someone was searching for something. Or someone. Amelia held her breath. Then she heard a man’s voice. Low. Cold. Certain. “So…” A pause. “You’re finally here.” The voice wasn’t speaking to her. It was speaking to someone else. Someone… Standing just outside the room.
