The rejection

620 Words
Seraphina’s POV The full moon glared through the glass ceiling above me, flooding the ballroom with silver light that reflected off the marble floors like a cruel spotlight. And there I stood — not in a gown like the others, not on a pedestal, but in the center of it all. Surrounded by whispers. Eyes watching. Judging. Waiting for me to fall. Tonight was supposed to be my claiming. Instead… it became my humiliation. “I, Alpha Karl Thorn of the Thorn Pack, reject you, Seraphina Vale, as my mate,” he said, his voice echoing through the hall like a death sentence. No emotion. No hesitation. Just cold finality. Gasps rippled through the room like crashing waves, but I didn’t move. My chest tightened. My soul cracked wide open. But I didn’t flinch. Not in front of them. Not in front of him. I lifted my chin, forcing myself to breathe. I wanted to scream. I wanted to break something—maybe even him. But instead… I bowed my head slightly. The way he always liked. The perfect image of submission. Let him think I was weak. Let him believe he broke me. I looked him straight in the eye and whispered the words that would sever our bond forever. “I accept your rejection.” The pain was immediate. Like something sacred inside me being ripped apart. But my face remained still. Calm. Cold. Karl’s mouth curled into a smirk. His hand was already wrapped around another woman’s — some sleek, nameless thing in red silk who didn’t even look my way. “A smart decision,” he muttered, already turning his back to me. “You were never Luna material anyway.” And just like that, it was done. Or so he thought. That’s when I felt it — a burn, deep and undeniable, at the edge of the room. Not Karl. Stronger. Colder. Watching. I turned my gaze toward the shadows in the corner of the ballroom… and there he stood. Alpha Lucien Drax. His eyes locked with mine. Unmoving. Unforgiving. As if he had been waiting for this exact moment. And something in me shifted. Because Karl may have broken the bond… But Lucien? Lucien looked like the one who would burn the whole world to claim me. I looked away quickly. I didn’t dare think anything just yet. I had to deal with the problem right in front of me. I turned and scanned the room. Familiar faces stared back. Most of them Karl’s friends. Others were powerful Alphas and Lunas I recognized from summit gatherings. He had invited all of them here tonight — just to embarrass me. And it worked. But I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of watching me crumble. Leaving the ballroom would mean I was affected. It would show weakness. And I wasn’t going to show weakness anymore. I had already spent three years doing that. Three years of being obedient, soft-spoken, and submissive. Of not resisting. Of not standing up for myself. And look where that had gotten me. Not anymore. I walked over to a passing waiter and took a glass of champagne. All eyes were still on me. I could hear the whispers circling like vultures. But I didn’t react. Because the truth was — none of them mattered. Then Karl’s voice rang out again. “I claim Sabrina Woods as my mate and future Luna.” Silence. The whole room froze. So did I. I hadn’t expected that. Karl had rejected me… and now he was claiming another woman in the same breath? I always knew he didn’t love me. I knew he never truly cared. But this? This was something else. This was war.
