"Devin's point of View"
I woke up groggily, the first thing that came to my attention was the stark white lights on the ceiling. Obviously, I wasn't in the cellar any longer. The hospital? I tried to sit up, and found myself covered in the typical wires and tubes of a hospital stay, an IV taped to my right arm. My body felt sore and weak all over. The Wolfsbane, of course, would have slowed down the healing process. I reached out in my thoughts for Evan, and found him quiet but there in the back of my mind. That was a relief, and I relaxed a little. My very next thought was for my pups.
The door opened, and I could smell that it was Mia before I saw her beside the bed. The doctor was with her. They noticed I was awake immediately and Mia knelt beside me, tears in her gorgeous green eyes. She grabbed my hand.
The doctor met my eyes for aoment and nodded and looked down at his clipboard before talking.
"You are finally healing. That's good news. We are happy to see your awake, how do you feel?"
Finally healing? How long had I been unconscious?
"My boys? Mia, My boys? Where are they? Their mother . . ." I choked, couldn't get the words out.
"Are they ok?" Mia squeezed my hand, nodding.
"They are fine, Devin. They are okay. Sad, confused, and more than ready to see you awake." She leaned forward, kissed my forehead. " They are at my house, with my mother. I know you don't have a lot of family, and I didn't know who to call."
I squeezed her hand back, happy they were safe and well.
" The last thing I remember is Eaton telling me he was going to get them, and kill them in that cabin. like, like he did Leah. He killed Leah." Tears welled up in my eyes, and I closed them, laid my head back on the pillow.
"He's dead." Mia said firmly. " It doesn't fix what he did, it can't bring her back, but I killed him. I ripped that monster's f*****g head right off." My eyes flew open, and met her gaze. She had killed him, had taken him on alone, to save me. I couldn't think of anything to say. My beautiful mate, a woman who had suffered far more than she ever should have had to, had faced her own demons. She hadn't needed me at all. The doctor cleared his throat.
"We are going to need to run some blood tests, to see if the silver levels have gone down since last week." He said and I gasped uncontrollably. A whole week? I had been lying here, unconscious for that long?
" Did you say a week? A week??" I sat up quickly, and everything hurt terribly. I groaned, putting my head in my hands. Mia put her hand on my leg, and I slowly met her eyes.
"Devin, it's actually been three weeks. Eaton had injected you with liquid silver. Between that and the wolfsbane on the ropes, you were nearly dead once I got you here."
I had been unconscious for three weeks?!
"Mia's point of view"
When we walked into Devin's hospital room, and I saw that he was awake, I was so relieved and happy. It had been a long, stressful three weeks.
Once I had gotten Devin to the hospital the day that it had all happened, they had immediately rushed him into the ER. It had been touch and go for hours, and they had been unsure whether he would live or die.
I had been sitting there, in complete shock, until a nurse noticed me shaking uncontrollably. She insisted on having me admitted too, and treated for shock and trauma. So, I had been laying in my own hospital bed when they finally came in with news of Devin. At first, from the solemn looks on their faces, I thought they would be telling me he hadn't made it, and I started panicking. They quickly informed me he was alive, and then explained that his physical condition had stabilized, but his mind was unresponsive. My Mate was in a coma. They went on to explain that he had nearly fatal levels of silver and wolfsbane in his system, and it was a miracle that he had made it here alive at all. Most wolves would have died shortly after the injections.
Knowing he was safe and breathing must have been exactly what I needed, because I passed out.
Fortunately, as both of us were in incapacitated, my mother had come to our rescue where the kids were concerned. I wont know how exactly she had convinced the school to release both my pups and Devin's to her, but she had. She had taken them all to my house, and stayed with them for those first couple of days. I was released the afternoon of Day Three. There was no change at all in Devin at that time. I sat by him for a while, and told him I loved him and I would be back soon. Then I went home to all of our kids.
I sat my kids down first. Raine, at ten, was a beautiful blonde little girl, with bright blue eyes and a dainty personality that always surprised me. My twins, George and Gwendolyn, were fun loving and happy kids, seemingly unaffected by the tense and terrible life that had been lived around them.
I told them quietly that their father was dead. That there wouldn't be a funeral, and It would just be us and Devin and his children going forward.
They had almost no reaction. Raine nodded quietly, hugged me, and asked to go and play. The twins barely acknowledged that I had spoke. They got up and followed Raine from the room.
I looked at my mother, and she put her hand on my shoulder in reassurance.
"They barely knew the man, Mia. They will be fine, as long as they have you.". I nodded. Thank god, Eaton didn't want to be a real father, and these kiddos would barely notice he was gone.
My next conversation would be a harder one. A terrible spouse, and an unhappy person, yes, but If there was one redeeming quality about Leah, it had been her mothering. She had been an amazing mom, especially since those boys were all she ever wanted. And with Devin still unconscious, I had no choice but to tell them what I could. Leah had no family left, and Devin hasn't ever had anyone he was close to. His Uncle lived overseas, and his own parents had passed years ago. I called them into the room, and sat with them on the couch. I was practically a stranger. They had only met me a handful of times. I felt horrible having to be the one to have this conversation.
"Boys, I want to tell you your father is in the hospital, but he is getting better. He should wake up soon, and when he does, I'll bring you right to him, ok? Until then, you will stay here with us. If you need anything at all, I want you to come find me or Ms Allison. Even if it's just to talk." They nodded and stared at me, as though they were terrified to ask the questions rolling around in their minds. I couldn't bring myself to tell them. I just couldn't. They should hear the news of their mother's death from Devin, not a strange woman they barely knew.
" As soon as Your dad wakes up, he will explain everything to you. Your dad is very special to me, you guys. and so are you, ok?" I hugged them close, and to my surprise, they hugged me back.
It won't be long, I thought, before Devin will be awake. He will know what to say.
little did I know then, just how long Three weeks with five kiddos and one ( or two) more growing inside could feel.
