Gedric’s father served as battle commander and his father before him. Protecting Elaaron is his life, his passion. He lives or dies by that.’ She put an arm around Irenya’s shoulders. ‘Still, I am surprised he spoke to you so harshly—and after all this time. What happened out there?’
‘Nothing. We hardly spoke, except when the bastard criticised my riding.’
‘That is all?’
Irenya straightened. She wiped at her wet cheeks with the sleeves of her riding leathers. ‘There was that other business, when I fell off Nettle.’
