Voices woke Irenya. An open window let in light and cool air. Her face felt a bit sore and her arms looked as if she’d sunbathed for too long. The voices faded. She slid out of bed, careful of the cuts on her hands as she wrapped the quilt around her. The long, rectangular window was set in a curved wall almost a metre thick and looked out over sloping tiled roofs to a precipice of grey rock and steep wooded slopes. She gathered the quilt against her belly and leaned across the sill. A breeze brushed her face and stung the skin of her shoulders. She shivered. Ignoring the bite of cold stone, she eased herself out as far as she dared. The nearest roof was a drop of three storeys at least.
