It was a betrayal that cut deep, shattering the image I had of him. That was the last time my mother showed emotion that was human-like. She became a shadow of herself and turned to drugs for happiness. When she overdosed three years later It led to her death.
My father came running to take me with him, spewing lies about how much he loved us but had to leave because my mother told him to.
Seeing the family he left us to build only fueled my resentment and anger. I blamed my father for abandoning us and choosing his selfish desires over his family. Over the years, the wounds festered into a deep-rooted bitterness.
I picked up my suitcase, left my suite, and made my way to the elevator. I met up with Leo and we boarded the plane.
“Sir please get some sleep, you look very tired,” Leo suggested. I nodded in return as my eyelids were heavy with sleep and my body seemed to be failing me. Before I knew it, I drifted off to sleep
“We have arrived sir”, I heard Leo’s voice cutting through the haze of sleep as I felt a gentle nudge on my shoulder. I blinked my eyes open slowly, adjusting to the soft lighting around me.
As I descended the steps of my luxurious private plane, the cool breeze of New York City gently brushed against my face. It felt good to be back, I thought to myself.
I looked forward and saw one of my drivers standing by an open car door, ready to escort me to my destination. The sleek black car, with its polished exterior, exuded an air of elegance and power, just as I liked it. Its leather seats embraced me as I settled into the backseat. Leo got into the front seat just as he was done transferring our luggage and the engine purred to life.
“Take me to the company, I have a meeting in a few hours,” I said to my driver.
As the car glided through the streets, I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. I brought it out and seeing the name on the screen made me roll my eyes. It was my father and even though I wasn’t in the mood to speak to him, I picked his call anyway.
“Hey Son, I need you to come over to the house immediately. We need to talk.” He said with urgency and authority in his voice.
“Yes, I am fine, Dad. Thanks for asking.“
He hesitated for a moment.
“I was just getting to…”
“You know what? You don’t need to pretend you care about me. I’ll be at the house soon.” I snapped as I ended the call.
“Change of plans, turn the car around. I need to get to my Father’s house immediately.” I wasn't really in the best of moods and having to see my father wasn't what I wanted to do.
The drive to the house was a long and dreadful ride for me, when we got to the house I got out of the car and told my driver to get the car back to the front of the house in the next 10 minutes. I didn't have plans to stay for too long in the house as I had work that had to attend to in the office.
I walked into my father's mansion with every stride that I took I could hear my steps hit the ground lightly. The house was big and empty it had so much void that every time I came in it shocked me that the house was still as empty as I remembered it to be. The hallway was decorated with expensive antiques, figuring that my father was able to use his power to get into his house instead of the museum. I looked around scanning the room to see if he was somewhere other than his office but I saw no sign of him and I walked straight to meet him in his office.
When I got into his office I saw that he and Darren were having a rather confidential and heated conversation. They both didn't notice that I had walked in so I cleared my throat to catch their attention and my father finally turned to face me.
"Good, you are here." Sometimes I wished he just treated me with a little more love other than just treating me like a lifeline for his business but I wasn't allowed to be weak.
"Yes, I'm. What's the problem father? I have a meeting to get to. So you get only 10 minutes of my time" I said with all the seriousness that I could muster
"Oh now you have become too busy for us, is that it now brother?" Darren said with a sly smile on his face. I wanted to punch the smile off his face for jeopardizing my hard work yet again
"I have nothing to say to you, Darren. I'm listening to you Father" I faced my father
"Well, since you have little time, I would be going straight to the point."
"I would appreciate that."
"Well, I have a company that I need you to be a part of but you can only do that if you are married or engaged. Now that cuts across to the both of you." It felt like my father had just thrown a glass bottle at me because nothing he said made sense to me
"So I need to be married or engaged to be able to join the company because?"
"I could get engaged by this night Father" Darren was always eager to impress our father since we were boys and I wasn't surprised he would say this
"Well father, there you have it. Darren and his overzealous self trying to please you again. Just go with him because I'm not getting engaged soon"
"Can you both just shut up? I would send you both the company policy to your emails and I need both of you in that company at all costs even if you have to hire a fiancee"
I was already irritated so I just agreed to him and told him to send the document through my secretary and I began to walk out on both of them. I could hear Darren saying something but I couldn't care less about what they both were saying. I walked through the long corridors again and this time I noticed that a particular vase was there but I didn't pay attention to it so I just walked past it.
I got to where my driver parked my car and I got in and told him to drive me down to the office. The drive was very quiet and I just kept thinking about the conversation I just had with my father but I didn't pay so much attention to it. I made a mental note to ask my secretary for the document when I was free so I could go through it and make sense of what he was saying. I looked out the window and saw a nice coffee and cake shop close to my building so I told the driver to stop me so I could get something from the shop.
I told him not to park the car directly in front of the building because I wanted to take a little walk down to the store. I got down from the vehicle and was adjusting my suit jacket when my driver called my attention to my wallet that was on the car seat.
"Thank you, Philip, I would have gone there to make a fool of myself" we both shared a little laugh. I closed the car door and started walking through the street to get to the shop. I was a little distracted because I was trying to put it into my pocket. That was when someone collided with me and spilled coffee all over me.
I thank God that it wasn't hot coffee cause I wouldn't have been pleased at all. When I looked up it was a school lady that was staring back at me with utmost surprise. I was so angry that I didn't even know what I was supposed to say to her. She bent down trying to save what was left of the cups in her hand. She knew that what she had done was the worst thing that could have happened.
The next words that flew out of my mouth shocked her "See what you’ve done, you clumsy t**t!” Could my day go any worse or better?
“What did you just call me?” nobody had ever had the guts to talk back at me, I was shocked and I was shut up for a few seconds.
