ORION Hot water slid down my face, soaking my shirt, dripping to the floor. I didn’t blink. I didn’t move. I had expected her anger. I had grown up inside it. Nothing she did surprised me anymore. But Avaline flinched. Her hand tightened on the counter, her breath catching like the heat had hit her instead of me. The bond. My pain crawling into her body. I kept my eyes on her for a second longer, making sure she was steady, before facing my mother again. “You hurt your own sister? Because of this useless new moon? How dare you? You cursed son!” she screamed, her face twisting with rage as her eyes snapped to the knife on the counter. She moved fast to grab it. So did I. My hand caught her wrist before the blade could lift. Her breath hitched as I squeezed her hand to stop her.
