Now that Cadmael didn't need my help with swordsmanship, we started meeting up for him to learn the cello. Cadmael was indeed a quick learner and I was very proud every time he managed to do what I showed him.
"Don't you want to join the music club? I asked."
If Cadmael joined a club, he would be able to make a lot of friends and have connections in this world. I didn't see him talk to people much. Maybe he would feel less shy with people who shared a common passion with him.
"Are you in the club?"
I didn't think this would be his reaction.
"No. I don't really like clubs."
I didn't like spending time with people. I was much happier surrounded by books. But this must be different for Cadmael. He was going to be emperor and he was going to be surrounded by a crowd all day long.
"Then me neither."
I almost laughed in front of this childish reaction.
"You don't have to copy everything I do. It would be a great opportunity to make new friends.
-I don't need other friends."
This child was really stubborn and I didn't know how to coax him.
"I won't always be there for you. Other friends could come in handy then."
I almost heard something break while looking at Cadmael's smile disappear. He suddenly got up and towered above me. I was so surprised that I quickly backed away but quickly ram into the wall. Cadmael was quick and protected my head before I crashed. Even though his hand was gentle, I never saw his eyes so dark before. I felt goosebumps and couldn't look away as if sucked in.
"Do you want to leave me?
-I can't stay with you forever.
-Why not?"
I didn't know what to say. I liked taking care of Cadmael but he was going to be the emperor. I had to disappear someday.
"I told you before. Don't leave me.
-Don't be scared I won't abandon you. But someday you'll be very busy and you won't have time for me anymore.
-I won't."
He was definitely stubborn.
"Promise me you won't leave me.
-Fine, I promise."
Cadmael immediately smiled and sat back in a good mood. I rolled my eyes. Of course I wasn't going to keep my promise. I was going to help Cadmael but someday he really won't need me anymore and I'll disappear then. However, I didn't forget my original plan:
"Don't you want to join a club? Not necessarily the music club.
-No. I prefer spending time with you.
-But being in a club is really great. You can share your passion with others. It is way funnier to share something you like. You can make lots of friends and have a great high school experience. Everyone joins clubs.
-Do you really want me to join a club?
-Yes. I believe it would do you a lot of good."
Cadmael looked at me with his piercing gaze. I started feeling uncomfortable when he suddenly straightened up:
"If this is what you want then I'll do it.
-Really?"
I couldn't believe it worked. Cadmael smiled at me softly:
"I would do anything you ask."
I accompanied Cadmael to the club's building and helped him choose which club to join. He went with the sparring club but after signing up he didn't leave:
"What is it?
-Are you sure you don't want to join a club?
-Yes.
-But you said it would make the high school experience worth it. Aren't you interested in the horse riding club?
-I don't need a club. I prefer riding alone."
Cadmael didn't insist anymore.
"Then you'll have to come watch me train.
-Me?
-Yes. You can read a book while waiting for me."
Would he be able to make friends if I follow him everywhere?
"But..."
Cadmael suddenly seemed down:
"I would be scared without you looking out for me."
This child really needed to learn how to live by himself. Maybe I spoiled him too much as a parent.
"Everything will be fine. You are the best swordsman in school. What could go wrong? You have to believe in yourself. Everyone will want to be your friend and we'll see each other a lot outside training."
Cadmael started pouting but I didn't yield. I rubbed his head and laughed. He really looked like a mad kitten. A huge mad kitten.
Eschyle didn't go back on his word and Cadmael went to the first club meeting alone. Everyone knew who he was having seen him win the tournament and everyone saw him destroy his opponents hand mercilessly. Therefore people felt a mixt of admiration and fear while looking at him. If Cadmael had smiled or had been a little more friendly, people would have quickly come to him and would have forgotten the past but seeing his face immediately discouraged people from wanting to get to know him.
Cadmael didn't have Eschyle around anymore therefore feeling no need to smile at all. His face became cold and his eyes sharper than his sword. He looked like a tyrant and no one wanted to finish in the hospital for saying the wrong thing. There was one young man who had to approach him being his partner for training: Alphonse. Alphonse was a young noble who didn't really like swords. He only learned how to wield one because of his father and was really talented which was his biggest deception. If he had been bad, no one would have objected to him abandoning practice. However, now he had to train day and night.
Alphonse did join the tournament and finished second place. This was the reason why the teacher put him with Cadmael. Being the opponent of this iceberg made him fancy sparring even less and Alphonse couldn't wait for the day to be finally over. He managed to somewhat keep up with this brute but didn't escape some bruises because of Cadmael's beastly force. Nothing seemed able to stop him and Alphonse didn't want to get up. The grass was really comfortable and he wanted to take a quick nap. Unfortunately, the teacher didn't let him sleep and he had to fight and fall again and again.
Cadmael was so terrifying with the sword that slowly people stopped training and started watching him with curious eyes. Even the teacher got interested and wanted to compare his strength to Cadmael's. The teacher did put up a fight but from the beginning it was clear who would win. Cadmael had a crushing aura and for some seconds people thought the teacher would die. He didn't admit it but Alphonse was sure even the teacher got scared for his life.
At the end of the training a small figure appeared. Alphonse recognized him immediately: Eschyle, the Duke's third son. He was head of the class in every subject and had gorgeous features. Hundreds of women were in love with him but for some reason they never confessed. They wouldn't be able even if they wanted to now because Eschyle had a fiance.
Eschyle was waiting at the edge of the training ground and Cadmael ran to him as soon as he saw the young man. Alphonse was so surprised that he almost fell. This man who had been filled with murderous intent was now smiling like a puppy. He even bowed his head and got pet by Eschyle. Alphonse looked around him to see if he was imagining things but everyone seemed as shocked as he was.
"You did great. See? Everything went fine."
Cadmael seemed really proud of himself for going to this first training and he asked for his head to be rubbed. I laughed before doing so.
"Did you learn something new?
-No. You are a way better master than him."
I put my hand on Cadmael's mouth. He was speaking very loudly and I was scared the teacher might hear him.
"Not so loud. What if he heard you?
-I don't care. That man means nothing to me.
-You should treat him with respect. He is your teacher.
-You are my only master."
I rolled my eyes. This child was driving me crazy.
"Did you make some friends?"
Cadmael seemed to hesitate before nodding.
"Really? Great! Who is it?"
Cadmael left for a second and quickly came back dragging a young man behind him.
"He is my opponent."
The young man struggled to stand because of Cadmael's monstrous strength. I patted Cadmael's hand and he let go of the poor young man.
"Hi, my name is Eschyle."
I raised my hand but for some reason the young man looked behind me at Cadmael and didn't dare accept my hand.
"My name is Alphonse.
-Nice to meet you, Alphonse."
I was really proud to meet Cadmael's friend. Was this what a parent felt when their kid went to school for the first time? I wanted to give them some time alone but Cadmael wasn't helping:
"I'm sure you two are exhausted. I'll leave you to rest.
-Stay with us.
-I'm sure that you are really hungry. You should go get something to eat. I'll see you at home.
-Come eat with us."
I felt that Cadmael wasn't going to let me go and for some reason even Alphonse seemed like he prefered me to stay. I agreed and we went to a close place.
