As with most major permanent military bases used during and following WWII in Europe and the Soviet Union, Ramstein Air Base didn’t appear on most maps in order to keep its location secret.
Even though modern technology has pretty much done away with attempts to keep such facilities hidden through the use of satellites, spy planes and other intelligence assets, efforts are still made to keep them in a low-profile environment.
Ramstein Air Base is a huge military complex that maintains both offensive and defensive capabilities for any combat contingency, and it’s surrounded by a chain-link fence interspersed with guard towers to keep unauthorized individuals from entering the controlled area.
