Frostmere Covenant

The Frostmere Peaks were a land of contrasts—beautiful yet brutal, serene yet deadly. As the trio pressed further into the mountains, the cold became an unrelenting force, and the wind, though carrying the faint smell of pine, was sharp enough to cut through their cloaks. Kael led the way with the ease of someone who had walked these paths before. She moved with confidence, her sharp green eyes scanning every shadow. Behind her, Sebastian hummed a tune under his breath, a weak attempt to lighten the mood. Elara brought up the rear, her mind focused on the path ahead and the secrets the peaks might hold. They had survived the Shrouded Pass, but the sense of unease lingered. The shadowy creatures, the whispers in the mist—they were warnings. And Elara knew better than to ignore warnings. They stopped at a narrow stream that cut through the rocky terrain, its surface frozen over. Kael knelt by the edge, breaking off a piece of ice and inspecting it. “Drinkable,” she said. Sebastian crouched beside her, using his dagger to chip at the ice. “Finally, something that doesn’t want to kill us.” “Don’t be so sure,” Kael muttered, her tone grim. Elara stood guard, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. She watched the treeline, the silence around them almost deafening. “Something’s wrong,” she said softly. Kael looked up, her expression sharp. “What do you mean?” Elara pointed to the stream. “No animals. No birds. Nothing.” Sebastian paused mid-sip, his face paling. “Should I not be drinking this?” Kael sighed. “It’s not the water. She’s right, though. This area should be teeming with wildlife. Something’s scared them off.” Elara’s grip on her sword tightened. “Let’s not linger.” As they continued, the terrain grew steeper, the path winding through jagged cliffs and icy ledges. It was late afternoon when they came upon an ancient stone archway carved into the side of the mountain. The arch was weathered but still imposing, its surface etched with strange runes. “This is it,” Kael said, her voice low. Elara approached the arch, her eyes narrowing at the runes. “What is this place?” Kael hesitated before answering. “The Covenant’s Gate. It’s said that long ago, the Frostmere Covenant was formed here—a pact between the guardians of the peaks and the mages who sought to use their power.” Sebastian frowned. “And let me guess. That didn’t end well.” Kael smirked. “Depends on who you ask.” Elara stepped closer, running her fingers over the runes. They pulsed faintly under her touch, a soft blue light illuminating the ancient carvings. “Magic,” she murmured. Kael nodded. “This place is a threshold. Beyond this gate lies the heart of the Frostmere Peaks. If your journey is tied to the relic, this is where you’ll find answers.” Sebastian glanced at the arch warily. “And what about the part where we die horribly?” Before Kael could respond, a low growl rumbled through the air. “Of course,” Sebastian muttered, drawing his dagger. From the shadows beyond the arch emerged a creature that seemed born of the peaks themselves. Its form was humanoid but translucent, its body composed of swirling ice and snow. Pale blue eyes glowed from its face, and frost spread across the ground with every step it took. Kael raised her bow. “An Ice Wraith. The Covenant’s guardian.” Elara drew her sword, her stance defensive. “Can it be killed?” Kael’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Not easily. It’s a manifestation of the peaks’ magic. But it’s bound to this place, which means it can be contained.” “Contained?” Sebastian echoed, incredulous. “That’s comforting.” The Wraith let out a bone-chilling shriek, the sound like the cracking of ice. It moved with inhuman speed, lunging at Elara with frost-coated claws. She parried the attack, her blade meeting the creature’s icy form. The impact sent a shock of cold through her arm, but she held firm. Kael loosed an arrow, the projectile embedding itself in the Wraith’s shoulder. It shrieked again, turning its attention to her. “Keep it distracted!” Kael shouted. “I’ll set a trap!” Sebastian darted forward, slashing at the Wraith’s legs. “Distract it? Sure. I love being bait.” While Kael worked quickly to inscribe runes in the snow, Elara and Sebastian kept the Wraith at bay. It moved like a winter storm, its attacks relentless and unpredictable. Elara’s sword glowed faintly, the magic within it resonating against the Wraith’s form. She pressed the advantage, striking with precision. “Hurry, Kael!” “Almost there!” Kael called back, her hands moving deftly. The Wraith turned its focus to Sebastian, its claws slashing through the air. He ducked and rolled, narrowly avoiding the attack. “This thing has it out for me!” he yelled. “Maybe it doesn’t like your singing,” Elara quipped, stepping in to intercept the Wraith. Finally, Kael stood, her work complete. The runes around her began to glow, forming a circle of light. “Get it into the trap!” she shouted. Elara and Sebastian worked together, driving the Wraith back toward the circle. It resisted, its shrieks echoing through the mountains, but they didn’t relent. When the Wraith stepped into the circle, the runes flared to life, trapping it within a cage of light. The Wraith thrashed against the barrier, its form flickering like a dying flame. Kael approached cautiously, her expression wary. “It won’t hold for long. We need to move.” Sebastian leaned against a rock, panting. “Move where? We don’t even know what we’re looking for.” Elara turned to Kael. “You said the heart of the peaks lies beyond this gate. What’s there?” Kael hesitated. “The Covenant’s sanctuary. If the relic you’re seeking has any connection to this place, that’s where it will be.” “And what’s guarding it?” Sebastian asked. Kael’s expression darkened. “Something far worse than an Ice Wraith.” They passed through the arch, the air growing colder still. The path beyond was steep and treacherous, winding through icy cliffs and deep ravines. As they climbed, Elara couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced back at the others. Sebastian, despite his exhaustion, kept his usual bravado, while Kael remained focused, her bow at the ready. “Do you think the Covenant still exists?” Elara asked Kael. Kael didn’t answer immediately. When she did, her voice was quiet. “If it does, it’s not the Covenant of old. Power like that always comes with a cost.” Sebastian sighed. “Why is it that every magical artifact is surrounded by death, destruction, and cryptic warnings? Couldn’t one of them just be guarded by, I don’t know, a friendly puppy?” Elara smirked. “Wouldn’t be much of a legend then, would it?” Sebastian grinned. “Fair point.” As the sun dipped below the horizon, they finally reached a plateau. In the fading light, they saw it—a massive stone structure carved into the mountain itself. The sanctuary of the Frostmere Covenant. It was both beautiful and foreboding, its towering spires covered in frost. Strange symbols adorned its walls, glowing faintly in the twilight. “This is it,” Kael said, her voice almost reverent. Elara stared at the sanctuary, her heart pounding. The answers they sought were inside, but so were the dangers Kael had warned them about. “Are we ready for this?” Sebastian asked, his tone unusually serious. Elara tightened her grip on her sword. “We don’t have a choice.” Together, they approached the sanctuary, the weight of their mission pressing heavily on their shoulders.
