The sanctuary had grown quieter, almost reverent, as the trio passed through its halls. The magical glow from the walls felt softer now, like the sanctuary itself acknowledged their progress. Yet, the air carried a chill that seeped into their bones—a reminder that their trials were far from over.
Sebastian broke the silence, his voice light but forced. “Well, that last trial was... therapeutic. Nothing like facing your darkest fears to bond as a team.”
Elara glanced at him, her expression caught between amusement and concern. “You mean the part where you argued with your father’s memory, or the part where you said you’d win a sewing contest?”
“I was being optimistic,” he replied with a shrug. “Can you blame me? I didn’t know we’d be unraveling our souls.”
Kael remained silent, walking a step ahead with her bow at the ready. She had been quieter than usual since they completed the Trial of Bonds, her jaw tight and her gaze fixed straight ahead. Elara wanted to say something, but she hesitated, knowing Kael’s walls were not so easily breached.
The next chamber was different from the others. The floor was made of polished obsidian, reflecting their figures like dark mirrors. Columns rose high into the vaulted ceiling, carved with symbols Elara couldn’t decipher but felt drawn to.
At the center of the room stood a pedestal, and on it rested a single object—a black shard, jagged and glowing faintly with an eerie light.
Sebastian whistled low. “That’s not ominous at all.”
Elara stepped closer, her boots clicking against the glossy floor. “It’s a fragment,” she murmured, feeling a strange pull toward it. “Of what, I don’t know, but it’s important.”
Kael moved beside her, her sharp gaze scanning the room. “It’s a trap. Nothing here is unguarded.”
As if on cue, the chamber shuddered. The polished surface rippled like water, and shadows began to emerge from the floor. They twisted and coiled, taking the shape of figures cloaked in darkness, their eyes glowing with crimson light.
“Right on time,” Sebastian muttered, drawing his daggers.
The shadowy figures attacked without hesitation, moving with unnatural speed. Kael was the first to react, loosing an arrow that flew straight and true, piercing the chest of one of the creatures. It dissolved into black mist, but two more took its place.
“There’s no end to them!” Kael called, firing another arrow.
Sebastian darted forward, his blades flashing as he slashed at another figure. “They’re fast, but not invincible. Just don’t let them touch you!”
Elara raised her hands, summoning a burst of light that illuminated the room. The shadows recoiled, hissing, but they quickly adapted, weaving around the light to strike from unexpected angles.
One of them lunged at Elara, its claw-like hands reaching for her throat. She dodged, barely avoiding its grasp, and countered with another flash of magic. The creature screeched and disintegrated, but the effort left her breathless.
“We need a plan!” she shouted, backing up toward her companions.
Kael’s mind raced as she shot down another attacker. “The shard,” she said suddenly. “It’s the source. We need to destroy it.”
“Of course it is,” Sebastian grunted, narrowly avoiding a swipe from one of the shadows. “Let me guess—it’s also impossible to touch without being cursed or something equally terrible?”
Elara’s eyes locked on the shard. “We don’t have a choice. Cover me!”
Elara sprinted toward the pedestal, her heart pounding as the shadows converged on her. Kael and Sebastian moved in sync, cutting down the figures that tried to intercept her path.
Kael’s arrows flew with precision, each shot finding its mark. Yet, for every shadow she destroyed, another seemed to rise in its place. Her quiver was growing lighter, and her arm ached from the constant draw of her bow.
Sebastian fought with a ferocity that belied his usual playful demeanor. His daggers moved like extensions of his hands, slicing through the shadows with fluid grace. But even he was beginning to tire, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
“Elara, whatever you’re going to do, do it fast!” he yelled.
Reaching the pedestal, Elara hesitated for only a moment before grabbing the shard. The moment her fingers closed around it, a searing pain shot through her hand, and her vision blurred. She stumbled, clutching the shard tightly as a voice whispered in her mind.
"You are not ready for the truth."
Elara gasped, her knees buckling as the shard’s energy surged through her. The room around her seemed to fade, replaced by flashes of images—a great battle, a towering figure cloaked in shadow, and a woman who looked hauntingly familiar.
“Elara!” Kael’s voice snapped her back to reality. The shadows were closing in, their hissing voices rising in a deafening crescendo.
With a cry of defiance, Elara channeled every ounce of magic she had into the shard. Light erupted from it, blinding and all-consuming. The shadows screeched one last time before vanishing, leaving the room eerily quiet.
The glow from the shard faded, and Elara collapsed to her knees, her strength drained. Kael and Sebastian rushed to her side, their weapons still drawn in case of another attack.
“Elara, are you okay?” Kael asked, her tone unusually soft.
Elara nodded weakly, her hand still clutching the shard. “I saw… something. Memories, or maybe visions. I don’t know what they mean, but they felt real.”
Sebastian helped her to her feet, his usual smirk replaced by genuine concern. “Next time, let’s not grab the cursed object without a backup plan, yeah?”
Elara managed a small smile. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
Kael examined the shard, her expression unreadable. “This is just a piece of something bigger. If the Covenant created it, we’ll need to find the rest to understand its purpose.”
Sebastian groaned. “More magical scavenger hunts. Fantastic.”
Elara straightened, her resolve hardening. “We’ve come this far. We can’t stop now.”
As they exited the chamber, the sanctuary’s magic seemed to hum around them, almost approvingly. The shard pulsed faintly in Elara’s hand, its glow a reminder of the challenges yet to come.
Sebastian glanced at her, his voice light but sincere. “So, fearless leader, what’s next?”
Elara met his gaze, her eyes steady. “We keep going. Whatever this shard is, it’s the key to finding the Crown of Shadows. And we’re going to find it, no matter what it takes.”
Kael nodded in silent agreement, and the three of them stepped into the unknown once more, their bond stronger than ever.
