Chapter 1

942 Words
The pouch light at Trevor's house had always been broken Elena remembered that as she stood beneath it, key in hand, rain needling the back of her neck. She'd bought that key a bulb twice. He'd never bothered to change it. Small things like that should have told her something, months ago. She let herself in the way she always did quiet, careful, not wanting to wake him if he'd fallen asleep studying. The apartment was dark except for a string of gold under the bedroom door. She heard voices before she reached it. His voice, low and amused. Then a laugh, she knew as well as her own bright, familiar , wrong in this room. Natalie. Elena's hand found the door frame before her mind caught up to whatever her body already understood. She didn't open the door. She didn't have to. Through the gap where it hasn't latched, she saw enough - Trevor's hand at Natalie's waist, the ease between them, the practiced comfort of two people who had done this before. Not once, Not by accident. She must have made a sound, because Trevor's head turned. "Elena".He said her name like a man caught mid-sentence, not mid-betrayal. He was already moving, already reaching for her, and something in the calm of it - the lack of panic- told her this had to be a rehearsal of it. He had been through this moment planned for it. "How long",she said. Her voice came out steadier than felt. "It's not what you think". "How long, Trevor". Natalie sat up, unhurried, and that was the second thing Elena would never forget not the affair itself, but how u bothered her best friend looked being found out. Like she'd waiting for this conversation instead of dreading it. "Since sophomore year", Natalie said. Two years. Two years of borrowed clothes and late night calls and I love you, you're my person-two years of a lie so total it had become the architecture of Elena's entire life. She felt something crack open, beneath her chest, wide and hollow, like a door off a hinge. She turned to leave. Trevor caught her wrist. "let go off me." "Just wait .......let me explain-" "let go". He didn't. His grip tightened, and the amusement that had been in his face replaced with something else - something Elena had never seen in him before and would spend months trying to forget. He pulled her back into the room, and for one suspended second with total clarity, that this had never only been about Natalie. That the two of them together in his room had been building toward something uglier than infidelity. "I have somewhere to be",she said. Keeping he voice flat, refusing to give him the fear he wanted. "You're not going anywhere until we talk about this properly." She didn't argue further. She drove her hand down into his instep, hard and when his grip loosened in surprise she wrenched free and was through the door before he'd finish swearing. She didn't stop at the stairwell. She didn't stop at the street. She ran until the rain had soaked clean through her jacket and her lungs burned and the apartment building was three blocks behind her, and only then did she let herself understand what happened in the room- what he wanted, and how close he had come to taking it. She had once planned, once , to make it public. To post what she knew, the screenshot and dated in the college forum where half their program would see it by morning. She'd had the message drafted for a week, sitting in an unsent folder like a loaded gun she hadn't been ready to fire. She never got the chance. By the time she stopped shaking long enough to open her phone, three new messages were already waiting - Not from Trevor. From Natalie. Screenshots of her own, taken at angles that made an ordinary study session with a male classmate look like something it wasn't. A warning dressed up as concern. People should know who you really are before you go around ruining lives Elena. It wasn't a threat, and it was effective. Elena deleted her draft that night and wrote another one. She didn't go back to her dorm. She went to the only place that had the loosest possible sense, been called home - the house in hollis street , where Harold and Deborah had raised her since she was seven, not out of love but out of a check the state used to send every month. She let herself in through the kitchen door, soaked and silent and thought foolishly she might make it up the stairs without being seen. Melissa was waiting in the hallway. Her cousin looked her up and down - the wey hair, the torn sleeve, the wrecked mascara and something in her expression sharpened with an interest that had nothing to do with concern. "Rough night?" melissa said. Elena didn't answer. She didn't have anything left of her. She climbed the stairs to the room that had quite felt like hers, closed the door, and sat on the edge of the bed in the dark, still dripping, still shaking and she let herself finally cry - not for Trevor, and Natalie, but for the version of herself who had believed, right up until an hour ago, she knew who loved her. She had no way of knowing downstairs Melissa was already rehearsing a different story for Harold and Deborah in the morning - one that would end with Elena's bags on the porch before the week went out.
