Chapter 4

1012 Words
The house did not look like a place where a man like Rafael Castellano would live. Elena had expected something colder - glass and steel, the architecture of a man who wanted to be seen. Instead the car turned through iron gates into a long drive lined with old oaks, and the house itself rose pale and some stone faced at the end of it, more fortress dressed as manor than the other way around. Alfonso drove, her hands were still bandaged, gauze white against her knuckles, and he'd still said little on the way except to ask, twice, if she was in pain. She wasn't, not really. What she felt was harder to name - the particular vertigo of going, within the space of four days from a laundromat chair to a house with its own gate. "Mr Castellano don't often bring people into the house", Alfonso said as they pulled up the drive, his eyes finding hers in the review mirror. "You should know that. Whatever you think his job is isn't ordinary." "Nothing about last week has been ordinary". That earned her close to a her smile. "No, I don't imagine it has." Inside, the house was quieter than she expected - no bustle staff, no visible security, through she had distinct sense of being cateloged the moment he crossed the threshold, the way a room goes still when someone competent is paying attention to everything at once. A woman in grey, older with the posture of someone who had never once been caught off guard, appeared in the hall and looked Elena over with an expression that gave away nothing. "This is Marisol," Alfonso said. "She runs the house. If you need anything and I'm not here, she'll know where it is." Marisol's nod was brief, assessing, not unkind. "Matteo's room is on the east wing. Yours is beside it". A pause, weightened with something Elena couldn't read yet." That was Mr Castellano instruction, not mine." Before Elena could ask what that meant, a low growl rolled out from the doorway to her left - not aggressive exactly, but full, deep, the sound of something large deciding whether a stranger deserved more attention than than that. A dog stood in the archway, black coated, built like something designed rather than bred, with the kind of stillness that made her understand immediately, why no else in the hallway had moved. "Nero", Alfonso said, low, a warning more than greeting. He doesn't take to people. Bit one of the security contractors last month badly enough then the man quit." The dog's eyes were fixed on Elena, and she felt every instinct in her body telling her to stay exactly where she was and not make a single sudden movement. But there was something underneath the growl that didn't quite match it's own threat - an assessment, not unlike the one Rafeal had given her in the sidewalk. She held still and let him look. Nero crossed the hallway in four unhurried steps and sat, without any drama and his approach had promised, directly in front of her. He didn't nudge her hand for attention. He simply sat, watching her an unsettling steadiness, tall and motionless. Alfonso made a sound in his throat that might have been surprise. "He's never done that". "He's a good boy. Elena said carefully unsure if that was the correct response to a dog that had apparently, hospitalized a grown man. "He's not a good boy. He's a very expensive, and a very dangerous animal who happens to like you, which is a different thing entirely. Alfonso studied the dog then her, with new interest. " Matteo will be pleased. He's been trying to get Nero to warm to anyone besides himself and Mr Castellano for months." As if summoned by this name, Matteo appeared at the top of the staircase, still in the same coat from the accident, and broke into a run that made Marisol call out a warning about the stairs he ignored completely. He collided into Elena's legs with the same unrestrained force he'd shown on the road, and this time sh laughed, surprised by how easy it came. "You came" he said, muffled against her chest side. " Papa said you might not". "I came". "Nero like you." He said like a verdict, final and unquestionable. He doesn't like anybody." "So I've heard". Rafeal's voice reached them before he did, cool and even from the top of the stairs. "Matteo, let Miss Vasquez breathe". The boy didn't let go, but he did look up at his father with the particular defiance only very young people manage without consequence. Rafeal descended the stairs at an unhurried pace that Elena was beginning to understand and less about composure and more about control - every moment delibrate, nothing wasted. He'd changed since the sidewalk. The tailored coat gone, replaced by something simpler, and without it he looked less like a headline and more like a man - though his eyes hadn't softened at all, still doing the same quiet cateloging she remembered. "Your hands", he said nodding at the bandages."Then looked at them properly?" "Yes. It's not serious." "Marisol will show you the terms of employment tonight. Read them carefully before you sign anything. "A pause brief but delibrate. "This isn't a household that tolerates carelessness, Miss Vasquez. Not with information, not when it comes to my son's safety, and not with my time. I expect the same discretion from you that I expect from everyone under this roof. "I understand". "I don't think you do yet". It wasn't unkind exactly, but it wasn't gentle either - a statement of fact rather than a warning. "You will. Marisol will show you to your room". He turned to go, and Elena watched him climb the stairs with the distinct sense that she had fully weighed and yet fully approved - that whatever verdict Nero and Matteo had already reached for her, Rafeal Castellano intended to reach his own, in his time, on his own terms.
