THE ATTACK

1152 Words
The morning sun cast long shadows across the DeLuca mansion as Richard prepared to leave. His bags were packed. His car was waiting. His journey of self-discovery was about to begin. But as he walked through the halls, he felt a weight pressing down on him—the weight of everything he was leaving behind. I'm doing the right thing. I need to find myself. But it doesn't make it any easier. Elena appeared at his side, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, are you sure about this?" Richard turned to face her. "I'm sure, Elena. I need to do this." Elena reached out and took his hand. "Then I'll be here when you come back. I'll always be here." Richard squeezed her hand. "I know, Elena. I know." --- Richard walked through the mansion, saying goodbye to the people who'd become his family. He found Miriam in the library, sitting by the fire, a book in her hands. She looked up as he entered, her eyes filled with tears. "Richard," she said. "I'm going to miss you." Richard walked to the armchair and knelt beside her. "I'm going to miss you too, Mother. But I'll be back." Miriam reached out and touched his face. "I know you will. You're a good man, Richard. A better man than I ever was." Richard took her hand. "You're a good woman, Mother. You just lost your way. But you found it again." Miriam smiled—a faint, weary expression. "Thank you, Richard. For everything." --- Richard found Enzo in the study, sitting behind his desk, a glass of whiskey in his hand. "Father," Richard said. "I'm leaving." Enzo looked up at him, his eyes filled with pride. "I know, Richard. And I'm proud of you." Richard walked to the desk and sat down across from him. "I'm not running away, Father. I just need time—time to find out who I really am." Enzo nodded slowly. "I know, Richard. And I understand. I've spent my whole life running from who I am. It takes courage to stop running and face yourself." Richard reached out and took his father's hand. "Thank you, Father. For everything." --- Richard found Nyla in the garden, sitting by the fountain, her face pale and drawn. "Nyla," he said as he approached. "I'm leaving." Nyla looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. "I know, Richard. And I understand." Richard sat down beside her. "I'm not leaving forever. I'll be back." Nyla reached out and took his hand. "I know. And I'll be here when you come back." Richard squeezed her hand. "Thank you, Nyla. For everything." --- Richard found Sable in the Velvet Cage, standing behind the bar, a glass of wine in her hand. "Sable," he said as he approached. "I'm leaving." Sable set down the glass and walked around the bar. "I know, Richard. And I understand." Richard reached out and took her hand. "I'm not leaving forever. I'll be back." Sable squeezed his hand. "I know. And I'll be here when you come back." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, Sable. For everything." --- Richard stood at the gates of the DeLuca mansion, looking back at the house. The sun was rising, casting pale gold light across the grounds. The house was quiet, the windows dark, the silence peaceful. I'm leaving. But I'll be back. I'll always come back. Richard got into his car and drove away. --- The journey began in silence. Richard drove through the city, the familiar streets passing by in a blur. He left the Harbor District behind, then the city limits, then the world he'd known. The mountains rose around him, their peaks covered in snow. The forests were dense and green, the rivers clear and cold. It was a world of beauty and peace—a world that seemed far removed from the violence and chaos he'd left behind. I'm free. I'm finally free. Richard pulled over at a scenic overlook and stepped out of the car. The view was breathtaking—a vast valley stretching out before him, the river winding through it like a silver ribbon. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and earth. I've spent my whole life fighting. Now it's time to live. Richard leaned against the car, feeling the weight of the past finally beginning to lift. --- Richard's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen—a message from Elena. "Richard, something's happened. The coalition is under attack. You need to come back." Richard stared at the message, his blood running cold. The coalition is under attack. The peace is broken. I need to come back. Richard got back in the car and drove. --- Richard arrived at the Velvet Cage as the sun was setting. The club was in chaos—the windows shattered, the furniture overturned, the walls scarred with bullet holes. Sable was coordinating the cleanup, her face pale and drawn. "What happened?" Richard asked. "Who did this?" Sable looked up at him, her eyes filled with exhaustion. "It was the old guard—remnants of the Syndicate and the Phoenix Council. They've been hiding in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. And they chose tonight." Richard felt a surge of rage. "Where are they now?" Sable met his gaze. "They're regrouping. They're planning another attack—something bigger. And they're coming for you." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice cold and hard. "Then we need to stop them. We need to destroy them—once and for all." --- Richard called a meeting of the coalition that evening. The leaders of the families gathered in the Velvet Cage, their faces pale and angry. Richard stood at the head of the table, his voice steady and firm. "The old guard has attacked us. They're planning another strike—something bigger. We need to stop them before they can hurt anyone else." Sable spoke up, her voice sharp. "We've identified their leader—a man named Marcus, who was once a member of the Syndicate's inner circle. He's been hiding in the shadows, waiting for his moment." Richard nodded slowly. "Then we need to find him. We need to stop him before he can strike again." --- Richard stood at the window of his bedroom, looking out at the city. The night was dark, the stars hidden behind a veil of clouds. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face. I left. I tried to find myself. But the past caught up with me. And now I need to fight again. Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk. The war was far from over—but he was ready to win it.
