THE SYNDICATE'S HAND

980 Words
Richard stood in the war room at the Velvet Cage, the evidence from Sloan spread across the table. The mole. Someone in his inner circle was feeding information to the Phoenix Council. Someone he trusted. Someone who'd been with him through everything—the battles, the betrayals, the victories. Who is it? Who would betray us after everything we've been through? Nyla appeared at his side, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, I've been analyzing the Phoenix Council's communications. They've been receiving information from someone inside our circle—detailed reports about our operations, our plans, our weaknesses." Richard turned to her. "Can you trace the source?" Nyla shook her head. "They're careful. The information is being relayed through a series of cutouts—intermediaries who don't know who they're working for. It's almost impossible to trace." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm. "Then we need to set a trap. We need to feed them false information and see who takes the bait." Nyla met his gaze. "That's risky. If the mole figures out what we're doing—" Richard shook his head. "They won't. We'll be careful. We'll make it look real." Nyla nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll start planning." --- The days passed in a blur of preparation. Richard and his allies worked through the plan, crafting false information that would expose the mole. They created fake documents, fabricated intelligence, and leaked it through channels they knew the mole would access. Sable coordinated the effort, using her contacts to spread the false information through the underworld. Vance—now gone—had been replaced by a new operative, a man named Dante who'd been recommended by Enzo. Troy organized the security detail, ensuring that the mole couldn't escape once they were exposed. Elena provided emotional support, her presence a constant reminder of what Richard was fighting to protect. And Enzo—Enzo provided the final piece of the puzzle. "Richard," he said one evening, his voice low and urgent. "I found something. Something you need to see." Richard followed his father into the library, where a stack of documents was spread across the table. "I've been going through the old records," Enzo said. "And I found this—a series of payments, made to an offshore account. The trail leads to someone in your inner circle." Richard picked up the documents and began to read. His eyes scanned the names, the dates, the amounts. And then he saw it—a name that made his blood run cold. Nyla. Richard stared at the name, his mind reeling. "Nyla? But she's been with me from the beginning. She's been my closest ally." Enzo met his gaze. "I know. But the evidence is clear. She's been receiving payments from the Phoenix Council for years." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need to confront her. We need to find out why she did it." --- The confrontation was held in the DeLuca mansion's study. Richard sat behind his father's desk, the evidence spread before him. Nyla sat across from him, her face pale and drawn, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. "Nyla," Richard said. "I found something. Something I think you should see." He slid the documents across the desk. Nyla stared at them, her face going white. "Richard," she said quietly. "I can explain—" Richard leaned forward. "Then explain. Why did you do it? Why did you betray us?" Nyla was silent for a long moment. Then she let out a long, shuddering breath. "Because I had no choice," she said. "The Phoenix Council had my brother—my younger brother. They've been holding him hostage for years, threatening to kill him if I didn't cooperate." Richard stared at her. "So you sold us out? You sold out everyone who trusted you?" Nyla nodded slowly. "I did. And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm. "I understand, Nyla. I don't agree with what you did—but I understand." Nyla looked up at him, her eyes filled with hope. "You're not going to kill me?" Richard shook his head. "No. I'm not going to kill you. But I need you to help me. I need you to tell me everything you know about the Phoenix Council's plans." Nyla nodded slowly. "I will. I'll tell you everything." --- The hours passed as Nyla spoke. She told Richard about the Phoenix Council's history, their leaders, their operations. She told him about the hidden facility in the mountains, the resources they'd amassed, the plans they'd been making. And she told him about the one thing that made Richard's blood run cold. "They're planning to strike soon," she said. "They've been building their forces, consolidating their resources. They're going to hit us hard—and they're going to try to destroy us once and for all." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm. "Then we need to be ready. We need to stop them before they can strike." Nyla reached out and took his hand. "I know, Richard. And I'm with you—whatever it takes." --- Richard stood at the window of the study, looking out at the city. The night was clear, the stars scattered across the sky like diamonds on black velvet. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face. I have allies. I have information. And I have a plan. But I also have enemies—enemies who are closer than I ever imagined. Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk. The war was far from over—but he was ready to win it.
