THE MOLE

Richard stood in his study, the documents from Enzo still clutched in his trembling hands.
Nyla. His closest ally, his most trusted friend, the woman who'd been with him through everything. She'd been feeding information to the Phoenix Council for years—betraying him, betraying everyone who trusted her.
She had no choice. They were holding her brother hostage. She was trying to protect her family.
Richard sank into his chair, his mind racing with everything he'd learned.
But she still betrayed us. She still sold us out. And now I have to decide what to do with her.
Richard looked up as the door creaked open. Elena stood in the doorway, her face pale and drawn.
"Richard," she said softly. "I heard about Nyla. About what she did."
Richard gestured for her to enter. "I don't know what to do, Elena. She betrayed us—but she was trying to protect her family. I understand why she did it. But I don't know if I can trust her again."
Elena walked to the desk and sat down across from him. "I understand, Richard. I don't agree with what she did—but I understand."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I need to talk to her. I need to understand why she did it—and if I can ever trust her again."

The meeting was held in the Velvet Cage, in the private room Sable had set aside for such occasions.
Nyla arrived alone, her face pale and drawn, her eyes filled with fear and regret. She sat down across from Richard, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"Richard," she said quietly. "I know you have questions. I know you're angry. And I'm ready to answer anything you ask."
Richard leaned forward, his voice quiet but firm. "Tell me everything, Nyla. Tell me how this started. Tell me why you did it. And tell me if I can ever trust you again."
Nyla was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice filled with anguish.
"It started five years ago," she said. "The Phoenix Council contacted me—told me they had my brother. He was working overseas, and they'd taken him. They said if I didn't cooperate, they'd kill him."
Richard stared at her. "Why didn't you come to me? Why didn't you trust me enough to tell me?"
Nyla shook her head. "I was afraid, Richard. I was afraid of what you'd think—afraid that you'd think I was weak, that I was a liability. And I was afraid of what they'd do to my brother if I didn't follow their orders."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
"I understand, Nyla. I don't agree with what you did—but I understand."
Nyla looked up at him, her eyes filled with hope. "Does that mean you're not going to kill me?"
Richard shook his head. "No. I'm not going to kill you. But I need you to help me. I need you to tell me everything you know about the Phoenix Council's plans—and I need you to help me stop them."
Nyla nodded slowly. "I will. I'll tell you everything."

The hours passed as Nyla spoke.
She told Richard about the Phoenix Council's operations, their resources, their weaknesses. She told him about the hidden facility in the mountains, the security measures, the key players.
And she told him about the one thing that made Richard's blood run cold.
"They have a mole inside our inner circle," Nyla said. "Someone who's been feeding them information for years—even before I was recruited. Someone who's been working with them from the very beginning."
Richard felt a chill run down his spine. "Who? Who is it?"
Nyla met his gaze. "I don't know. They never told me. But I know they've been feeding them information about everything—our plans, our operations, our weaknesses. And I know they're planning to strike soon."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice cold and hard.
"Then we need to find them. We need to expose the mole—and we need to stop them before they can strike."

Richard stood at the window of the Velvet Cage, looking out at the city.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the streets. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face.
Another mole. Another betrayal. How many more are there? How many more people have been working against us from the inside?
Elena appeared at his side, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, I heard about the mole. About what Nyla told you."
Richard turned to face her. "I don't know who to trust anymore, Elena. Everyone I've trusted has betrayed me—Sloan, Axel, Nyla. How do I know who's really on my side?"
Elena reached out and took his hand. "You can trust me, Richard. You've always been able to trust me. And I'm not going anywhere."
Richard squeezed her hand. "I know, Elena. I know."

Richard returned to the mansion and found Nyla waiting for him in the garden.
She was sitting by the fountain, her face pale and drawn, her eyes filled with exhaustion.
"Richard," she said as he approached. "I've been thinking about the mole. About who it could be."
Richard sat down beside her. "And?"
Nyla met his gaze. "I think it's someone close to you. Someone you've trusted for years. Someone who's been with you through everything."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Who?"
Nyla shook her head. "I don't know. But I think it's someone who's been feeding information to the Phoenix Council from the very beginning. Someone who's been playing a long game."
Richard felt a chill run down his spine. "Then we need to find them. We need to expose them before they can hurt anyone else."
Nyla nodded slowly. "I know. And I'm going to help you."
