THE BODY COUNT

1057 Words
The morning sun rose over the Harbor District, casting pale gold light across the scars of battle. Richard stood at the edge of the pier, looking out at the water. The fighting was over. The Syndicate's remnants had been scattered, their leader captured, their network destroyed. But the cost of victory was written across the faces of his allies—the exhaustion, the grief, the weight of everything they'd lost. Nyla appeared at his side, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, I've been taking stock of our losses. It's... it's not good." Richard turned to her. "How bad?" Nyla was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "We lost twelve people in the mansion attack. Six at the Velvet Cage. Another nine in the Dockside Slums." She paused, her voice cracking. "And Vance—Vance was wounded. It's bad, Richard. Real bad." Richard felt his blood run cold. "Where is he?" "He's at the Velvet Cage. Sable's people are tending to him. But the doctors say..." Nyla's voice trailed off. Richard grabbed her arm. "What do they say?" Nyla met his gaze, her eyes filled with tears. "They say he might not make it." --- Richard drove through the city, his mind racing with fear and grief. The streets were empty, the city still recovering from the battle. The signs of the fighting were everywhere—broken windows, damaged buildings, the faint smell of smoke in the air. Vance. My friend. My ally. He can't die. He can't. Richard arrived at the Velvet Cage and rushed inside. Sable was waiting for him in the hallway, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, he's in the back room. The doctors are doing everything they can." Richard pushed past her and entered the room. Vance was lying on a makeshift cot, his face pale and bloodied, his chest wrapped in bandages. A doctor was tending to him, his movements quick and precise. "Vance," Richard said, kneeling beside him. "Vance, can you hear me?" Vance's eyes fluttered open. He looked at Richard, a faint smile crossing his lips. "Richard," he said weakly. "You came." Richard took his hand. "Of course I came. You're my friend." Vance squeezed his hand weakly. "I'm sorry, Richard. I'm sorry for everything. I should have told you about my father. I should have been honest with you." Richard shook his head. "It doesn't matter now. Just focus on getting better." Vance's smile faded. "I don't think I'm going to get better, Richard. I think this is it." Richard felt a surge of grief. "No. You're going to be fine. You're going to pull through." Vance shook his head weakly. "I've made my peace, Richard. I've made my peace with everything." He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But there's something I need to tell you. Something important." Richard leaned closer. "What is it?" Vance met his gaze, his eyes filled with urgency. "The Syndicate isn't destroyed. There's another faction—a shadow faction that's been operating in secret. They're the ones who've been pulling the strings all along. They're the ones who created Project Phoenix." Richard stared at him. "Another faction? Who are they?" Vance's eyes fluttered closed. "They're called the Phoenix Council. They're the original founders—the ones who started everything. They've been watching from the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike." His voice grew weaker. "They're going to come for you, Richard. They're going to try to destroy you." Richard squeezed his hand. "Then we'll stop them. We'll destroy them just like we destroyed the Syndicate." Vance's eyes opened one last time. "Be careful, Richard. They're more dangerous than anything you've faced. They're... they're everywhere." His eyes closed, and his hand went limp. Richard knelt beside him, his heart aching. My friend. My ally. He's gone. --- Richard stood in the hallway outside the room, his mind reeling with grief. Sable appeared at his side, her face pale and drawn. "Richard, I'm so sorry. I know how much he meant to you." Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "He told me something before he died. He told me about another faction—the Phoenix Council. They're the ones who've been pulling the strings all along." Sable stared at him. "The Phoenix Council? I've heard rumors about them, but I thought they were just a myth." Richard shook his head. "They're real. And they're coming for us." Sable reached out and took his hand. "Then we'll be ready. We'll fight them—just like we fought the Syndicate." Richard squeezed her hand. "I know. But first, I need to bury my friend." --- Richard stood at the cemetery, watching as Vance's casket was lowered into the ground. The funeral was small—just family and close friends. Elena stood beside him, her face pale and drawn. Nyla was across the grave, her eyes filled with tears. Sable stood in the back, her face a mask of stone. Richard felt the weight of everything pressing down on him—the loss, the grief, the fear of what was to come. He was my friend. My ally. He gave his life to protect us. And I'm not going to let his sacrifice be in vain. Richard walked to the grave and placed a hand on the casket. "Thank you, Vance," he said quietly. "Thank you for everything." --- Richard stood at the window of his bedroom, looking out at the city. The night was dark, the stars hidden behind a veil of clouds. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face. The Phoenix Council. They're out there, watching, waiting. And they're going to come for us. Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk. He had a war to plan. --- His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen—a message from an unknown number. "You think you've won. You think you've destroyed us. But you don't know the half of it. We're the Phoenix Council. We created the Syndicate. We created Project Phoenix. And we're coming for you." Richard stared at the message, his blood running cold. They're real. And they're coming for us. Richard grabbed his coat and walked out the door.
