THE MEMORY

1651 Words
The drive back to the city was silent. Richard sat in the passenger seat, his mother's envelope clutched in his hands, his mind racing with everything she'd told him. The Syndicate's origins. Project Phoenix. The rival faction. And the truth about his own soul—chosen, guided, placed in this body for a purpose he'd never asked for. Nyla drove in silence, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. She'd sensed his need for quiet, his need to process the weight of what he'd learned. She chose me. She chose my soul because she knew I was strong enough to lead. But I don't want to lead. I want to destroy. Richard closed his eyes and let the memories wash over him. --- He was in the alley again. The rain was falling, cold and relentless, soaking through his clothes and chilling him to the bone. He was lying on the ground, his back against the wet asphalt, the warmth of his blood spreading beneath him. The shadow stood over him, gun in hand, face hidden beneath the brim of a hat. "You were supposed to be smarter than this, Richard." He recognized the voice now. It was Marcus—but not the Marcus he'd met at the lighthouse. This Marcus was younger, harder, his voice stripped of the weariness that Richard had seen in his eyes. "I was exactly as smart as I needed to be," Richard heard himself say. "Seems like I was exactly as smart as I needed to be." The shadow laughed. "And you think dying in an alley is winning?" "I'm not the one who's going to remember this moment for the rest of my life." The shadow's finger tightened on the trigger. "You always had a silver tongue. It's what made you useful." "And it's what made you afraid." "I'm not afraid of a dead man." Richard coughed, blood bubbling at his lips. "Then why are you still standing here?" The shadow was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Because I need to be sure." Richard felt the gun press against his forehead. He closed his eyes, waiting for the end. But it never came. Instead, the shadow lowered the weapon and stepped back. "You're not going to die tonight, Richard," the shadow said. "Not yet. There's still something you need to do." Richard opened his eyes. "What?" The shadow smiled—a cold, cruel expression. "You're going to live. You're going to be reborn. And you're going to destroy the Syndicate—or die trying." "Why would I do that?" "Because I'm going to make sure you have no choice. I'm going to make sure you understand what's at stake—what happens when people like us fail." Richard tried to speak, but the darkness was already closing in. The last thing he saw was the shadow's face, illuminated by a flash of lightning. He saw the face clearly for the first time. It was his own. --- Richard gasped and opened his eyes. The car was still moving, the city lights flickering through the windows. Nyla glanced at him, her face filled with concern. "Richard? Are you okay?" Richard wiped the sweat from his brow, his heart pounding. "I'm fine. Just... a memory." "A memory of what?" Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "I remembered something. Something from my past life. The moment I was shot—the moment I died." Nyla's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "What did you remember?" Richard turned to look at her, his eyes haunted. "I remembered the face of the man who killed me." --- They arrived at the DeLuca mansion as the sun was setting. Richard walked through the halls, his mind still reeling from the memory. He'd seen his own face—his past-life face—staring back at him from the shadows. The man who'd killed him was him. Or at least, he looked like him. It was Marcus. But it was also someone else. Someone who knew me, who understood me, who wanted me to suffer. Richard found Elena in the garden, sitting by the fountain, her face pale and drawn. "Richard," she said as he approached. "You're back. What happened? What did you find?" Richard sat down beside her, his voice low and urgent. "I found my mother. I found the truth. And I found something else—something I didn't expect." Elena reached out and took his hand. "What is it?" Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "I remembered the moment I died, Elena. I remembered the face of the man who killed me. And it was... it was my own face. Or at least, it looked like me." Elena stared at him. "What does that mean?" "I don't know. But I think it means my past life is more connected to this one than I realized. I think there's something I'm not understanding—something important." Elena squeezed his hand. "Then we'll figure it out together. We'll find the answers—no matter what it takes." Richard nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Thank you, Elena. I don't know what I'd do without you." --- Richard walked into his bedroom and sat at his desk. The files from his mother were spread out before him—names, dates, locations. Evidence that could bring down the entire Syndicate. But there was something else in the envelope. A photograph, tucked into the back, hidden among the documents. Richard pulled it out and studied it. It was a picture of two men, standing side by side in front of the Mountain Retreat. One was Marcus—younger, harder, but unmistakably the same man. The other was a man Richard didn't recognize—tall and thin, with cold eyes and a cruel smile. But there was something familiar about him. Something that made Richard's blood run cold. I've seen this man before. But where? When? Richard turned the photograph over. On the back, in his mother's handwriting, was a single line. Marcus and his brother, Viktor. They were the first subjects of Project Phoenix. Richard stared at the photograph, his heart pounding. Marcus had a brother. A brother who was also part of Project Phoenix. A brother who looked like... Richard closed his eyes, the memory flooding back. The shadow in the alley. The face he'd seen in the lightning. It wasn't Marcus. It was Viktor. Viktor killed me in my past life. Richard opened his eyes, his mind racing. Marcus is my ally. Viktor is my enemy. They're brothers—and they're both connected to the Syndicate. Richard set the photograph down and pulled out his phone. He dialed Sable's number. "Richard?" Her voice was anxious. "What's wrong?" "I need to see you. Tonight. It's urgent." There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I'll be here. Come whenever you're ready." --- Richard arrived at the Velvet Cage within the hour. Sable was waiting for him in her private office, her face pale and her eyes filled with concern. "Richard," she said as he entered. "What's going on?" Richard handed her the photograph. "I found this in my mother's files. It's Marcus and his brother Viktor. They were the first subjects of Project Phoenix." Sable studied the photograph, her face going pale. "Viktor. I've heard that name before. He's one of the Syndicate's most dangerous operatives—a ghost, a phantom. No one knows where he is or what he's planning." Richard met her gaze. "He's the one who killed me in my past life. He was the shadow in the alley—the man who pulled the trigger." Sable stared at him. "Are you sure?" Richard nodded. "I remembered it. I saw his face in the lightning. It was Viktor." Sable was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "If Viktor is still alive, he's still dangerous. He's been hunting you, Richard—watching you, waiting for the right moment to strike." Richard nodded. "I know. That's why I need to find him before he finds me." Sable reached across the desk and took his hand. "Then we'll find him together. We'll stop him—no matter what it takes." --- Richard left the Velvet Cage and walked through the night. The streets were empty, the fog thick and gray. He moved through the shadows, his senses alert for any sign of danger. Viktor killed me once. He's not going to get a second chance. Richard pulled out his phone and dialed Nyla's number. "Richard?" Her voice was sleepy. "What's wrong?" "I need you to look into something for me. A man named Viktor. He was part of Project Phoenix—Marcus's brother. I need to know everything you can find about him." There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I'll start looking first thing in the morning." Richard nodded. "Thank you, Nyla. I owe you." "Just stay safe, Richard. That's all I ask." --- Richard returned to the mansion as dawn was breaking. He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, his mind filled with everything he'd learned. Viktor. Marcus's brother. The man who killed me in my past life. He's still out there—waiting, watching, planning. Richard closed his eyes. He had enemies on all sides—the Syndicate, his father, Viktor. But he also had allies—Elena, Nyla, Sable, Vance, Troy, and even Marcus. I'm not alone. I have people I can trust. People who believe in me. Richard felt a flicker of hope. He was going to find Viktor. He was going to destroy the Syndicate. And he was going to protect his family—no matter what it took.
